Yasenets: description and cultivation rules

HomeAll flowers that start with YYasenets: description and cultivation rules

Yasenets (dictamnus) is an unusual plant with many names. Dictamnus is the Latin name for the ash tree, translated as “dicte” – mountain, “ihamnos” – bush. In the people, this plant is also called wild star anise and ash. The official Russian name refers to its ash-like foliage. It is also called the burning bush. Dictamnus secrete essential oils, which in calm weather accumulate near the surface of the leaves and, if you bring a match, can flare up.

The plant does not suffer. But the gardener’s skin may suffer, because these substances cause chemical burns.

True, this is possible only in sunny, hot, windless weather.

Lovers of these flowers should remember that when touching the flower of a beautiful ash tree, a person does not feel anything, but later the skin turns red, blistered and a real burn appears.

Nevertheless, these are unique and in some way one-of-a-kind plants with which you can decorate your garden, only keeping this feature in mind.

Ash plant species

There are only 6 species of this plant, very similar to each other. They live in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere of the earth.

All types of such shrubs are suitable for growing in gardens, but are most often found in culture:

  • Caucasian (dictamnus caucasicus);
  • white (dictamnus albus) and its white-flowered form;
  • occasionally hairy (dictamnus dasycarpum).

The general description for all these species is: ash-like leaves, medium height (from 60 to 120 cm) and a tall inflorescence of numerous large pink, whimsically shaped flowers with darker veins.

Plants bloom for quite a long time, two weeks in June.

An adult bush, consisting of a dozen or two strong shoots, looks enchanting.

Rules for planting and caring for ash

What are the rules for planting a beautiful ash tree, and what care should be taken of it? Ash trees are quite demanding: in the soil they need the presence of calcium, humus, it is better to dry them than to fill them.

The soil around the grass, which is called ash, must be mulched.

The place where the ash plant is grown should be sun-drenched or slightly darkened.

It is good if low shrubs grow nearby.

A flower such as ash-tree (see photo) in one place can grow up to ten years:

It is best to plant dictamnus more spaciously because he does not like cramped quarters and large neighbors. But this does not mean that group landings should be forgotten.

So the ash tree looks great with liatris, geykhera or monarda.

Water such a plant should be moderate, and it is enough to fertilize up to two times during the flowering period.

The process of planting an unpretentious ash tree and the rules for caring for it are shown in the photo:

Division and transplantation, even in early spring or autumn, greatly weakens the plants, next year they do not bloom, the bushes become smaller. Another advantage is its ability to winter under the snow, because the star anise does not need to be covered with anything in the winter. As you can see, the ash tree does not require special care.

Ash trees are plants of open places and edges, in the garden their place is in the middle level of flower beds, away from the paths (so as not to inadvertently get burned). The adult shrub of the plant is stable in size, it can be surrounded by almost any perennials: hostas, geraniums, cuffs, jeffersonia; small-bulbous. Also, the flower will look great on an alpine hill, a flat rockery, a rocky slope. Dictamnus looks great among the stones, because in the wild he chooses such a neighborhood for himself.

Features of growing grass ash seed from seeds

There are several ways to propagate ash tree:

  • seeds;
  • division of the bush;
  • using cuttings.

It is optimal to propagate the ash tree with seeds, which are preferably sown immediately after harvest and left for the winter in the garden. Growing an unusual ash tree from seeds has its own characteristics. It should be remembered that planting ash, and later care, goes better in open ground to a depth of about one centimeter. If necessary, the next year, the seeds can be threaded, and after three years it is transplanted to a permanent habitat. Seedlings develop slowly but steadily, bloom in the 3rd-4th year from sowing, reach full decorativeness in another two years.

If you decide to divide an already adult bush, this must be done in spring or autumn, until the active growth of the plant has begun. When transplanting a flower, do not forget about drainage, as well as lime – it needs very little. After that, the soil must be mulched and watered.

For planting cuttings in the ground, they are first cut from young shoots, it is best to do this in the summer.

After that, they must be treated with a growth stimulator and planted in the ground at a distance of about 35 centimeters.

The ash tree is a beautiful and unpretentious flower, however, it is worth remembering the precautions.

It is best to work with it with gloves so as not to get burned.

Plants do not tolerate too wet soil, they should be planted in raised flower beds in loose soil.

In addition, wild star anise is also a medicinal flower, it is often used in folk medicine.
