Description of the winged flower

The genus includes about 40 species of herbs, semi-shrubs or shrubs , undersized, with short straight or creeping stems from 3-5 to 25-30 cm high, and numerous small densely sitting gray-green leaves. Small flowers are collected in large rounded racemose inflorescences, their color varies from white and pale pink to purple. Flowering is long and abundant, in optimal conditions it lasts from early spring to late summer.

In nature, plants live in the mountains at an altitude of 1-3 km above sea level, so they are extremely drought-resistant, intolerant of high humidity and soil. They prefer poor, calcareous soils, but can also grow in neutral or slightly acidic soil. The best place in the garden is the sunny side of the alpine hill, it can be successfully grown in containers. They grow well, forming low dense curtains, thanks to the gray-green foliage, they are decorative throughout the growing season. For the winter, shelter from excessive moisture is required.

The following species are grown in gardens:

A. rotundifolium , a plant for mini-rock gardens only 2-3 cm high, pink flowers, round leaves, bluish-blue;

Large-flowered winged grass (A. grandiflorum) , the most unpretentious species for the middle lane, 20-30 cm in height, with gray-green subulate leaves and pale pink flowers. The popular variety of this winged gnome, the Pink Dwarf, is more compact, growing up to 10-20 cm.

Hybrid species, winged stalk (A. x warleyense) , outwardly similar to the previous one, but higher (25-30 cm), with larger leaves and flowers. There is a pink Warley Rose and a rarer dark red Warley Ruber.
