Plant type: perennial, herbaceous.

Description: Ask any gardener about these plants and you will hear different opinions about them, but every one of them will tell you that these flowers are incredibly popular and often used to decorate modern gardens. They belong to the lily family. There are only about twenty species in the genus. Most varieties grow in Japan. Japanese Tricyrtis blooms very spectacularly and is of great value for the garden. The Japanese name for tricirtis is Hototogisu, which means “cuckoo”. These Asian plants grow up to 90 cm tall. They need careful care, but in general they are easy to care for.

  • Origin: Asia, from eastern Nepal to Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippine Islands.
  • Lighting: partial shade or shade.

Flowering: Tricyrtis are very hardy perennials, their flowers are somewhat reminiscent of orchids, and they bloom in autumn, at a time when many plants have already faded and the garden is not so beautiful. These plants have graceful upright stems that bear unusually shaped pink flowers tinged with purplish-black spots. Despite the fact that these perennials are quite hardy, they bloom very late, because of which they often suffer irreparable damage from frost. Some varieties bloom 2-3 weeks earlier than usual.

Tritsyrtis – care

Soil Type: Requires moist, peaty, nutrient-rich soil. It is desirable that it contains organic fertilizers. Tricyrtis, which is not so difficult to care for, will thrive if the soil is slightly acidic.

Watering: The soil should always be moist. In hot and dry weather, regular watering is required. In the spring, it is desirable to mulch the soil, thus avoiding excessive evaporation of moisture and keeping the soil cool.

Reproduction: carried out by planting seeds or division. It is quite difficult to grow a flower from seeds, and gardeners usually purchase ready-made seedlings. But in any case, if you decide to plant seeds, then the planting depth should be about 3 mm. The best time to plant seeds is autumn or spring, but before the last frost. It is necessary to plant plants at a distance of 15 cm from each other, while choosing a shady part of the garden.

If you decide to grow tricyrtis indoors, then the seeds should be planted in peat pots about a month and a half before the last frost. The seeds will germinate within three months. The temperature should be around 18-21°C. After frost, seedlings can be planted in the garden. As a rule, these perennials bloom in the first year after planting the seeds.

Pests: snails or slugs may appear.

Uses: Tricyrtis are great for growing in the garden and can be planted alongside flowers such as hostas, helleborus, erythroniums and wood lilies. All of these species require the same conditions and are easy to care for. Having created such a combination of flowers in your garden, you will enjoy their long flowering period.
