Aquilegia terry is a showy but unpretentious perennial that successfully tolerates the conditions of central Russia and pleases the eye with lush flowering throughout the summer months. Many gardeners have long appreciated this culture, because even with minimal care, it is able to bloom profusely and decorate the garden. To date, many terry varieties have been bred, surprising with luxurious buds of all kinds of colors.

Description

Aquilegia terry is a perennial plant consisting of upright, slightly branching or non-branching stems. The height of the bush does not exceed 1 m. Most varieties reach 40 – 60 cm, but there are also tall plants reaching more than 1 m.

This culture has a powerful root system that goes deep into the soil layers. The leaves are rounded or rounded-elongated, have an openwork edging. Their color varies from bright to dark green.

The flowers of the terry variety of aquilegia are rather large, with a diameter of 4 to 8 cm, and consist of many petals rounded at the base. Most often, the inflorescences are drooping, but in some varieties the baskets are directed upwards. On the buds there are long growths, popularly called “spurs”. In them, the flower accumulates moisture and nectar.

When breeding aquilegia, it should be borne in mind that the life expectancy of this plant is about 6 to 7 years. Older specimens lose their decorative effect, so they need to be replaced with young plants.

Varieties

Aquilegia terry is distinguished by a large number of varieties with their own unique characteristics. Due to this, this culture is popular among flower growers. Among the most beautiful varieties, the following are distinguished:

“Terry giants” – aquilegia 60 – 80 cm high with large multi-petal inflorescences of snow-white, purple, purple, lilac color. Flowering can be observed from the second half of May to mid-June, but the timing may vary in different regions. Frost hardy variety.

“Poppy Canna” – one of the highest varieties, which is a bush 120 cm high. Inflorescences with long sharp spurs, of various colors.

“Krista” is a medium-sized plant with lush purple inflorescences.

“White” – a variety of terry aquilegia, characterized by large multi-petal snow-white inflorescences. Suitable for breeding in the middle latitudes of Russia. It has high resistance to low temperatures.

“Columbine” is a perennial bush 70 cm high. Inflorescences are paniculate, consist of flowers with a diameter of 6 cm, white, lilac, lilac.

“Red” – a lush terry variety of aquilegia with expressive scarlet flowers. The bush grows up to 60 cm. Frost resistance is high.

“Terry Blend” is a popular varietal blend of aquilegia with lush buds in all sorts of shades. Petals can be monochromatic or bicolor.

Landing

Terry aquilegia is propagated using seeds, dividing the overgrown bush into parts and cuttings. Having decided to get this culture by seed, the grower must take into account that flowering will occur only 3 years after planting.

Seeds are sown for seedlings immediately with the onset of spring. Containers with crops are kept in a warm room or in a greenhouse at a temperature of 16 – 21 degrees.

To obtain seedlings by division, the overgrown 5-year-old mother bush is carefully dug out, trying not to damage the roots, then, using a clean knife, is divided into equal parts so that each has three healthy growth buds. Seedlings are immediately placed in the holes in a permanent place.

To obtain cuttings from strong adult specimens of aquilegia, several processes are cut off. The cuttings are kept in a solution that stimulates root growth for several hours, then they are buried in the substrate, covered with polyethylene to create greenhouse conditions.

Planting of this culture is carried out on a site with diffused light. It is not recommended to plant a flower in a completely open place where it will be in direct sunlight. There is a high probability of getting burns and death of the plant.

The soil should be loamy, fertile. Previously, the site should be cleared of weeds, dug up, add a mineral composition to the poor soil. Aquilegia seedlings are planted at a distance of 25 cm.

Care

Aquilegia terry needs minimal care after planting, but the gardener must follow a few basic rules.

Watering. This culture is moisture-loving, but excess moisture in the soil should not be allowed, which will lead to rotting of the roots. You need to irrigate the bush as the top layer of the earth dries. Recommended top watering from a watering can, simulating rain.

Top dressing. During the cultivation of aquilegia, organic and mineral fertilizers are applied, alternating them. Cloudy weather is the best time to recharge the soil. On hot, clear days, it is better to apply fertilizer in the afternoon, combining this work with watering. Top dressing is needed from May to June 1 time per month, then you can feed one more time at the end of the flowering period.

Wintering. All varieties of terry aquilegia are highly resistant to frost, so up to 5 years of age they do not need shelter for the winter. In specimens that have reached 5 years, the roots are close to the surface of the soil. For them, they build a shelter for the cold season, using a mixture of humus and peat for this.

Other care. After watering, it is necessary to loosen the soil near the plant, eliminate weeds. To keep maintenance work to a minimum, you need to sprinkle the area around it with a layer of mulch. Pests and diseases affect the flower extremely rarely and only without proper care.
