Pandanus: types and care at home

HomeAll flowers that start with PPandanus: types and care at home

The houseplant pandanus or spiral pine requires a lot of space. Some of its species are similar to palm trees, therefore, when caring for such pandanus, they are given a lot of territory, placing a tub in the brightest place in the room. Experienced flower growers, advising how to care for pandanus, recommend not moistening the ground, but watering the plant exclusively through the pan.

Pandanus (Pandanus) belongs to the Pandanaceae family. Homeland – the tropics of Africa, South Asia and the islands of the Indian Ocean.

The genus unites about 600 species of woody plants, shrubs and woody vines, common on the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean. Lives in the coastal zone. Several species are cultivated.

Pandanaceae are evergreen treelike plants. Outwardly, many of them resemble palm trees. Their range covers the tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, other islands of the Indian Ocean, India, Indochina, as well as the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean.

The genus pandanus is the most diverse in terms of adaptability to living conditions.

Many of its species are inhabitants of sea coasts, where on gentle shores on a sandy or rocky ground, on coastal dunes or cliffs, they often form entire thickets, sometimes difficult to pass.

In Madagascar pandanus, a 3-4 meter unbranched trunk bears large leaves up to 9-10 m long in the upper part. Later, thin lateral branches form on the trunk.

Pandanus inflorescences emit fragrance. The size and mass of seedlings in the genus Pandanus varies from small heads to huge and heavy cobs, as, for example, in the simple pandanus (Pandanus simplex).

A single cob of this plant reaches a length of 60 cm with a width of up to 20 cm and a mass of 25 kg.

The fruits of pandanus growing on ocean coasts are carried by the waters of the ocean.

Such fruits with an airy tissue in the outer part of the coating and with seeds protected by a strong, almost waterproof layer, are able to stay afloat for months.

Pandanus (Pandanus) in English is also called “spiral pine” because of its thin spirally grouped leaves. They can often be identified by the many aerial stilted roots at the base of the trunk. The knobby, round, multi-lobed fruits are available all year round and are good food in many varieties.

Pandanus is a beautiful decorative leafy plant. The leaves are gracefully curved, xiphoid, linear, dark green, reach a length of up to 1 m. The plant forms powerful aerial stilted roots, which serve as an additional support for it. The flowers are yellow, collected in dense inflorescences.

Rarely blooms indoors.

Pandanus plant species and their photos

The most interesting are the following types:

Pandanus Veitch (P. veitchii) – white-mottled serrated or smooth leaves up to 120 cm long.

P. useful (P. utilis) .

P. covering (P. tectorius) .

P. sander (P. sanderi) – yellow stripes on the leaves.

Pandanus Veycha. An evergreen plant with a short trunk branching from the base and aerial roots extending from it, which, having reached the ground, immediately go deep into it. Over time, the lower part of the trunk dies off, and the plant rests on the roots, as if on props. The leaves are close together and tightly cover each other with their bases, forming an apical rosette.

Pay attention to the photo – the leaves of the pandanus of this species are dark green, leathery, with wide white stripes along the edge, glossy on both sides:

They reach 120 cm in length. The leaf blades are sharp-sharp at the edges. Does not flower in cultivation.

Pandanus sander . It differs from the previous species in numerous narrow white-yellow stripes on the leaves.

Pandanus is very decorative, it is used as a single plant, or in the form of a monogroup, or in combination with other species that are similar in biological requirements, in foyers, halls, sales areas of shops, in winter gardens.

As shown in the photo, a homemade pandanus flower will decorate a terrace or balcony, enliven even the smallest room:
