The attitude of amateur flower growers to the monstera indoor flower (Monstera) – this evergreen sprawling giant with huge dissected leaves and long aerial roots – is very ambiguous.

Someone is ready to make room himself, if only his beloved monster was free, and someone calls him a “monster” and a “vampire” and will never agree to start a home.

The genus includes about 50 monstera species distributed in the tropical forests of Central and South America.

As an indoor flower, monstera is most often grown, which, when conditions are optimal for its development, can bloom for 6-7 years of life and thank with sweet and sour purple berries with the smell of pineapple.

Monstera deliciosa is a powerful liana with shoots up to 5 m long and large (up to 50 cm in diameter) long-leaved dark green leaves.

At the ends of the lateral veins, there are specific organs – hydathodes, through which, at high humidity, excess water is released. It seems that the monstera houseplant is crying.

In young leaves, the leaf plate is solid; with age, characteristic perforations appear on it.

In the photo of monstera plants presented above, special attention should be paid to aerial roots. They give the plant a specific charm, giving the impression of outlandish vines descending from the nodes of the main stem.

Monstera care at home

For good growth, monstera requires high humidity, year-round warmth (winter temperature is not lower than +16 ° C), plentiful, but without stagnant water in the pan, watering and daily spraying with soft water.

When caring for a monstera at home, you should not forget to wash the leaves regularly, as they collect a lot of dust on their surface. Monstera is undemanding to lighting, but with a long stay in shaded conditions, characteristic perforations on the leaves do not form. Afraid of direct sunlight.

Top dressing is carried out in the warm season, once a week. Young plants are transplanted annually in the spring, less often with age. In large specimens, transplanting can be replaced by updating the topsoil in a container. Aerial roots are not removed, but directed to the pot and rooted. They supply the plant with additional nutrition and serve as a support. Propagated by apical and stem cuttings with one or two internodes.

Mnstera indoor plant is a spectacular single plant that will always be in the spotlight and add an exotic flavor to the interior.
