Ixia at home

You can grow tropical flowers not only in the garden. It turns out that ixia at home also grows well.

In the room, this representative of the South African flora is presented in the form of a corm-bulbous herbaceous perennial. The plant grows up to 50 cm tall and has long narrow leaves. Medium-sized buds with a characteristic aroma are collected in a beautiful paniculate, many-flowered or spike-shaped inflorescence. There are no leaves on this inflorescence.

Ixia is a light-loving flower that reproduces by children, corms and seeds. The soil likes nutritious, with neutral acidity. The best option is a mixture of peat and sod land with the obligatory addition of sand and drainage arrangement.

Growing ixia at home and in a pot

Ixia in a pot at home is possible, but for this it is necessary to create the appropriate conditions in the room. Since this is a light-loving plant, it needs to be grown in a bright, cool room. That is, a winter garden or a heated balcony is the best place for a capricious “tropical”. In low light and high temperature, the ixia stretches out, while losing its decorative properties.

Bulbs are planted in a pot in autumn (late September – early October). To do this, containers with a diameter of 13-15 cm are taken. 5-7 ixia bulbs can be planted in each such container.

As a soil, you can use a ready-made purchased substrate for bulbous plants, or you can cook it yourself: soddy land, humus or peat, coarse sand is taken in a ratio of 5:2:1. The resulting mixture should be neutral.

The next 3 weeks after planting the bulbs, keep the minimum watering and the temperature at 7-8 °C. Watering should be done so that the soil is not completely dry. After the emergence of sprouts, watering is gradually increased. When planting bulbs in September, flowering can already be expected in February. During the budding period, the plant needs good watering.

Another condition for lush flowering is optimal humidity. Ixia at home in pots is placed on a pallet moistened with expanded clay. It is advisable to spray the air around the plants.

During the period of active growth, the plant needs bright lighting with a little shading from the burning rays of the sun. Mandatory fertilizing with mineral fertilizers. You can use liquid top dressing for bulbous plants.
