Epipremnum: types and varieties, care and reproduction

Epipremnum flower (Epipremnum) – This is a representative of a small genus of vines, distinguished by their longevity.

It represents both high climbing and small specimens.

There are about 30 varieties of epipremnum, which are distributed mainly in the rainforests of India, as well as in Southeast Asia.

Family: Araceae. Homeland – Solomon Islands, Southeast Asia. Epipremnumis an evergreen ornamental vine with large leaves up to 10 cm long, often with white, green or golden strokes.

A variety of species and varieties of epipremnum

There is a fairly large variety of types of epipremnum, which can differ significantly from each other not only in size, but also in the way they are cared for.

Epipremnum forest (E. silvaticum) is a large plant, the size of which can reach 6 m in length. Whole leaves of this creeper can reach a size of 10 to 20 cm in length, but are rather narrow – their width is no more than 6 cm.

In indoor floriculture, golden epipremnum (E. aureum) is most often used. This vine can grow up to 2 meters in length. This is a tall plant that actively branches and weaves, so many people choose this particular species.

Many photos show that the epipremnum flower is planted in pots in several copies, which are placed side by side so that the plants can contact and intertwine.

There is an indoor variety of golden epipremnum (E. aureum cultivar – “N’Joy”) . It is an ideal ornamental vine that has a small size that allows it to be grown at home, as well as unusual leaf color. The rough leaves of a plant such as golden epipremnum reach a size of no more than 6 cm both in breadth and in length, densely arranged along the entire length of the stem.

In specialized stores you can buy varieties: Epipremnum “Marble Queen” (“Marble Queen”),

“Golden Pothos” (“Golden Pothos”) – they are spectacular due to bright spots on green leaves.

Care and reproduction of epipremnum

As you know, epipremnum is considered a very unpretentious plant. It is ideal for those who do not have much time for flower care, but want to decorate their home or office with an exotic climbing plant that also grows very quickly.
Epipremnum grows well in partial shade. But it is better not to keep it in the sun or a southern window. Otherwise, the plant will require extremely frequent watering, and the leaves will get a faded color. But do not go to extremes – too dark a room will cause the variegated color to disappear from the leaves, and they will not grow to their usual size.

There is a photo of how the epipremnumof variegated varieties completely acquires a dark green color in case of insufficient lighting.

In winter, the temperature should not fall below 17-18 °C. It tolerates dry indoor air, but in hot weather it should be sprayed with soft water. It is advisable to ensure that the plant is not affected by drafts and large temperature changes.
The substrate is prepared from leaf and sod land and coarse sand (1:1:1).
As already mentioned, at home, caring for epipremnum is not a difficult task for the reason that the plant does not require too much attention during cultivation. Probably the most difficult process in breeding vines will be attaching them.
Water carefully, however, the soil mixture should be constantly moderately moist. It’s a good idea to let the soil dry out a bit between waterings, though. The fact is that due to too high soil moisture, the roots of the plant may begin to rot. Reduce watering in winter.
From April to September, the plant should be fed with flower fertilizer.

The photo shows that epipremnum grows well at home, and when caring for it, there is almost no need to feed it with nutrients. However, if desired, this can be done once or twice a month.

There is also no need to prune the plant, but if the owner wants to control the shape and size of the plant, then this method can also be used. In order for new shoots to appear, you need to cut the stem to a leaf that is about 5 cm from the base of the plant.
As the roots of the earthen coma are braided, a transplant is made. With the growth of the flower, the roots constantly outgrow the pot, and then the plant needs to be transplanted into a larger pot. You can understand that the time for transplantation has come by the fact that the leaves and the general camp of the vine look dull and sagging, regardless of watering and lighting. To check this, you need to carefully remove the flower from the pot and see if the roots are completely wrapped around the earthen ball. If so, the vine is transplanted into fresh soil, into a pot one or two sizes larger.
Propagation is by apical or stem cuttings. This is a very straightforward process. For cuttings, you need to separate from the plant and simply put it in well-moistened soil or even in a glass of water in order for small roots to appear. After their appearance, it is advisable to transplant the flower into suitable soil as soon as possible for its better further development.
You can choose the time for reproduction yourself, but it is best to do this in the spring at a temperature of 22-24 ° C.
Epipremnum care also includes getting rid of all kinds of pests, which, however, this plant does not have so many. Most often, this flower can be affected by a spider mite. In order to get rid of this pest, you can use a bactericidal soap, or, as experts advise, you can remove insects with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.
Most of the problems that can arise when growing this vine are usually associated with poor conditions for their maintenance.
