Datura and Brugmansia are large, closely related plants, strewn throughout the summer with a cascade of large graceful bell-shaped flowers and filling the air with a heady aroma. The genus Brugmansia combines six species of perennial shrubs and small trees , formerly belonging to the genus Datura of the Solanaceae family.

In indoor floriculture, mainly hybrid forms are used, in particular snow-white Brugmansia (Brugmansia x candida), which is sometimes found on sale under the name Datura candida Brugmansia. It is a sprawling tree about 2 m tall with large oval light green leaves (up to 20 cm long) and large funnel-shaped drooping flowers.

A rich selection of colors and shapes is offered in the Angels variety group. It is these plants that are often called “angel’s trumpets” for their elongated bell-shaped flowers resembling trumpets.

A variety of varieties differ in the degree of elongation of the corolla, its shape and the arrangement of the petals.

In the photo of Brugmansia flowers, you can see that the inflorescences can be simple, terry or two-level, mostly white, pink, yellow or orange.

Brugmansias of the Flava variety group are more demanding for care, but they have an unusual flower shape, rich color, are compact and do not have a strong aroma.

The flowering period lasts from July to September, and although each Brugmansia flower lives 3-5 days, new ones immediately open to replace the faded ones.

Brugmansia care at home

Homeland Brugmansia – tropical regions of South America. It does not tolerate cold snaps at all, therefore, in areas with a temperate climate, it can only be taken out into the open air from the end of May to September (in a tub or planted in open ground). In winter, a well-lit, cool room (+13 … +15 ° C) with moderate air humidity is suitable. With a lack of light or low temperatures, it can shed foliage.

For abundant and long-term flowering of Brugmansia at home, the following care is needed: abundant watering, generous feeding (once a week with complex fertilizer for flowering plants) and a sufficient amount of soil. The roots of the plant are very sensitive to overheating, so clay containers are used for planting. Formative pruning is carried out in spring (weak shoots that are stretched out due to insufficient winter lighting are removed) and in autumn (to make it more compact in size before “moving” to an apartment).

When placing an angel trumpet flower in a room, ensure that there is good ventilation, as the scent of the flowers can cause headaches.
