Asian double lily is a perennial plant of Central Asian origin. The distribution area is the foothill regions of the south-east of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, eastern Uzbekistan. The climate of the territory is characterized by continentality: hot summers and cold winters. The plant tolerates severe frosts down to -40 ° C. The survival rate in the European part of Russia is high. Unlike other bulbous plants, there is no need to dig up the bulb for the winter. Asiatic terry lily prefers acidic soils found in Russia north of the latitude of Tula and to the east.

Amateur gardeners appreciate the unpretentiousness of the plant and its large bud. All Asian lilies are unpretentious in their care. They respond well to fertilization. On the territory of our country, the flower is grown in open ground.

Flowering is gradual. On the day, the Asiatic terry lily opens no more than one bud. The process can take up to two weeks. The Asiatic lily blossom aroma is deep with oriental spicy notes.

Varieties

The varieties presented on the domestic market are hybrid or come from wild varieties of Central Asia. At present, frost-resistant hybrids and varieties with high decorative characteristics have been bred. Cultivated by domestic lovers have a stem height not exceeding 120 cm.

Another direction of breeding is the timing of maturation. Early varieties begin flowering in June. Late varieties finish flowering by August 15, and the process begins in early August. The average flowering period is two weeks.

Varieties with slow maturation have been bred. The bud in them does not open immediately, but with petals. At the same time, the inflorescence, like that of other Asian lilies, opens one bud at a time.

Thus, flowering can last a month. As a rule, they are obtained by selection methods. They are characterized by a large number of inflorescences – 30 or more up to 100. Created for decorative purposes for garden plots, adjacent residential areas, decoration of settlements. Not used in buds.

The most popular varieties of this crop are described below.

“Elodie” is a high variety of Asian terry lily, the stem length of which reaches up to 120 centimeters. On the stem from 7 to 10 inflorescences. When flowering, they form large buds of at least 15 centimeters in diameter. Bud in the form of a bowl. The throat of the bud is yellowish. The color of the petals is a delicate pink with black patches. The inner side of the petal with purple strokes. Terry – medium. The stamens are light. The bulb withstands frosts down to -35 degrees.

“Mystery Dream” is an early variety of Asian double lily with large flowers up to 18 centimeters in diameter and with a stem 80 – 90 centimeters high. Terry – high. Appears from the second year. The color of the bud is light green with a dark speck in the center. The flower calyx is located unusually. Unlike other varieties, it is allowed to tilt to the side or down. The life of the flower does not exceed 12 days. Like all early maturing Asiatic lilies, it blooms faster, and the flowering period is less than 2 weeks.

“Snowboard” – Asiatic terry lily, which is one of the most expressive varieties, therefore it is often used to make a bouquet. The height of the stem is 80 centimeters. It is characterized by strength and a large number of leaves per stem compared to other varieties. Bud up to 18 centimeters in diameter, less often – up to 20 cm. Color – pale white with a large pink speck on the edging. Strokes on the outer side of the petals. Terry is average. It has a high decorative value. Ripens in July.

“Fata Morgana” – Asiatic terry lily, which is distinguished by high decorative properties, abundant flowering. Up to 20 inflorescences can be located on the stem. On average 7 – 9 buds. The splendor of the bud does not depend on the number of inflorescences. Bud – terry with 12 petals. The color is yellow with large dark red patches. The flower is arranged in the form of a bowl. Tall petals are directed upwards. A characteristic feature of the variety is the absence of anthers.

“Spring Pink” is a hybrid variety of Asian double lily with high doubleness, which has high decorative characteristics. The height of the stem is 90 centimeters. Inflorescence – 15 centimeters in diameter. Bud color is pink or white. A characteristic feature is a pronounced edging. The appearance of the bud is as if powdered. Each petal has a border at the base. This is due to purple blotches throughout the petal. One stem can have 30 or more inflorescences. Rarely, their number reaches 100.

“Bentley” – a frost-resistant variety of Asian terry lily with early flowering, differs in that it begins flowering as early as June. Resistant to pests and diseases. Unlike other early maturing varieties, it has a standard flowering period of 2 weeks. Less whimsical to the soil. The stem is up to a meter high. The flower is large up to 17 centimeters in diameter with high doubleness. Color pale white pinkish. There is a pink edging on the petals. The variety belongs to the derived hybrids.

Reproduction and cultivation

Mulching is used to harvest. The layer thickness is at least 5 centimeters. For mulch, pine bark, needles, traditional foliage, and straw are used. Top dressing and fertilizer should be carried out during the formation of inflorescences.

Allowed during the staining period. Fertilizing at the time leads to a quick completion of the process, therefore it is not recommended. The last top dressing in the conditions of the European part of Russia is carried out until August 15.

Plant survival depends on planting. There is no ideal landing time. The decision on the time of planting the bulb in each case is made individually. Recommendation – planting before winter in the fall, so that the plant hardens. To avoid freezing, the beds are covered. For this, non-woven materials are used.

An important factor is the place of landing. Like all lilies, Asian varieties do not like stagnant water. For their planting when planting in open ground, it is better to choose an elevated place on the site.

Good light affects not only maturation, but also the quality of the plant. With a lack of sunlight, the curvature of the stem towards the better lit side can reach 45 degrees. Therefore, open spaces are chosen for landing.

Spring planting is allowed. In Russian latitudes, it does not carry any risks. Bulbs are planted in open ground. Before planting, they are treated with karbofos. Planted in pre-fertilized soil or in prepared soil.

The use of nitrogen fertilizers is not allowed. For top dressing, only phosphates are used. Top dressing is allowed in the hole during planting. Sand is certainly added to the hole or next to the hole.

Before landing, preparatory work is carried out. The place of future beds is dug up on a shovel bayonet. Be sure to organize a drainage layer. Stagnant water, when it enters between the scales, leads to darkening of the bulb and rotting.

Direct planting is carried out in a hole with a depth of 2 – 3 bulb diameters. If the soil is loamy or represented by sandy loam, then they are planted closer to the surface by 2 diameters of the bulb, with a fertile layer – 3 diameters.

A small layer of sand is poured into the dug hole. After that, the bulb is set upside down and sprinkled with soil. The next hole is organized at a distance of at least 20 centimeters. For the drainage system to work effectively, the distances between the wells must be the same. When the bed is organized, it will be mulched.

Care

Care for Asian lilies consists in performing standard operations: watering, fertilizing, weeding. When planting before winter, no procedures are carried out until May.

Watering is an important procedure for all lilies. It must be moderate. It is better to underfill water than create an excess of it. The flower may wither due to overflow, which causes the bulb to darken.

If an overflow occurs, the following operation is used to prevent morbidity. Mix two tablespoons of wood ash and sand in equal volumes. The resulting mixture is poured under the plant and do not water it for a week.

Watering is done under the root to prevent the leaves from getting wet. Moisture on the leaves is a good breeding ground for fungi. With constant wetting, plant burns in the sun are possible.

Top dressing is the main factor in the maturation of lush and bright inflorescences, so it is recommended to feed up to 4 times per season. Do not use nitrogen fertilizers. The last top dressing before winter is done after flowering no later than August 15 to help the plant recover.

Weeding is carried out after each watering. With the removal of weeds, the earth must be carefully loosened.
