Arabis of Ferdinand of Coburg ( Arabis ferdinandi-coburgi ) is one of the most attractive outwardly varieties of arabis. Valued for decorative foliage that does not lose freshness and brightness for several months. This type is used to decorate empty plots in the garden, complement flower arrangements, and create original flower beds. Gardeners note the unpretentiousness of the nature of this plant, the ability to successfully grow in various parts of the garden, including in partial shade.

Description

Ground cover plant, which is a perennial with thin, fleshy branching shoots. Reaches about 7 cm in height. It looks like a lush thick carpet, quickly occupying large areas. When in contact with the soil, the stems of this groundcover quickly take root.

The leaves are large, smooth, shiny, rich green, sometimes with a purple tint. A wide white uneven border runs along the edge of the foliage. Sheet plates are collected in a dense outlet.

Loose inflorescences develop in the upper part of the shoots – brushes up to 10 cm long. The flowers are simple, white, up to 0.5 cm in diameter, have a pleasant light aroma. The bush is covered with small flowers from May to June.

Varieties

Based on the decorative leafy variety, several interesting forms have been developed. The description of the most popular of them is given below.

Arabis Ferdinand of Coburg “Variegata” is a perennial variety that is a ground cover no more than 6 cm high. The bush consists of many thin branched creeping shoots. The leaves are oval, with large teeth along the edge, a rich green hue, sometimes with a pink tint. A white or cream edging 0.5 cm wide runs along the edge. The flowers are white, enclosed in racemose loose inflorescences. The variety is used to create alpine slides, rabatok, rocky gardens, making beautiful flower beds in combination with undersized bright flowers.

Arabis Ferdinand of Coburg “Old Gold” is an evergreen perennial plant, which is a lush carpet that extends widely due to branching creeping shoots. The height of the bush is 5 cm, width – 30 cm. Over time, the plant takes up more and more space. The leaves are large, oval, light green, with a wide white or yellowish or pale pink border. The flowers are small, white, abundantly cover the plant during flowering. The variety is used to decorate borders, create mixborders, rocky slides.

Varieties of this species grow well in sunny and semi-shaded areas. In full shade, the leaves will be solid dark green without their characteristic border. The soil should be moderately fertile, without excess nutrients. Watering should be moderate, avoiding moisture stagnation in the substrate.

Fertilization is not required when growing this crop. We must not forget about such procedures as loosening the soil and eliminating weeds. The plant has a stable immunity to diseases and pests, so there are usually no problems when breeding it.
