HomeAll flowers that start with AAdonis flower (Adonis): description and cultivation

Growing adonis (Adonis) is a troublesome business: this is mainly due to the difficulties in propagating this plant. The fact is that after planting adonis, no more than half of the seeds germinate, so there is no need to save planting material – thickening will not occur. But those Adonis flowers that nevertheless took root will delight you with violent growth and bright colors.

Adonis got its name from the beloved of the Greek goddess Aphrodite – the handsome Adonis. Adonises belong to the buttercup family. In total, there are about 45 types of adonis. At the same time, only 5 species are cultivated. Summer-flowering varieties of adonis are mostly annuals. But the spring adonis (Adonis) belongs to perennial crops and, according to some naturalists, its age can exceed 150 years.

The adonis stem is erect, without branches or with several branches. The leaves are pinnately dissected. Flowers are small (4-6 cm in diameter). The number of petals is from 10 to 20 pieces. The color of the petals is rich yellow, there is a glossy sheen. Fruits – polynuts, ripen in June-July.

Adonis (Adonis) is a poisonous plant, so care must be taken when growing it. Flowering of spring Adonis begins in April or May, depending on
varieties. The flowering period is up to three weeks. At night, the buds close, as in cloudy weather.

Varieties of spring adonis

Below is a description and photo of Adonis summer and spring varieties.

A very beautiful, but rather difficult plant to grow is spring adonis (Adonis vernalis) . According to the description, spring adonis is similar to summer adonis, but there are still some differences. In the people, the adonis is called Montenegrin, starodubka, yellow flower or golden flower.

Look at the photo of spring adonis (Adonis): its flowers really look like small golden suns.

In garden plots, this flower is found infrequently, as it is demanding on soil and care. In order for Adonis to delight you with its amazing flowers for many years, you will have to put in a lot of effort and patience. However, the effort pays off – this little miracle of nature is worth it.

here is the text.

Adonis amur (Adonis amurensis), common in nature on the Far Eastern plains, blooms in spring. This is a perennial with pale golden flowers that reach about 5 cm in diameter.

As can be seen in the photo of Adonis (Adonis) Amur, the leaves of the plant are pinnate, and the stem is erect (about 15 cm tall). Flowering of Adonis amurensis begins earlier than spring and lasts about 15 days.

Adonis Amur is propagated only vegetatively, since the seeds almost never germinate. These flowers do not tolerate transplanting well. There are several decorative varieties of Amur Adonis with double flowers of various colors. These varieties come from Japan. It is they who are recommended to be planted in garden plots. Adonis spring and Amur frost-resistant.

Planting, care and reproduction of adonis

Adonises make exquisite combinations with daffodils, coloring the flower bed in various shades of delicate yellow. These are the perfect flowers for an alpine slide. Adonis are best planted in small areas where you can provide them with appropriate care and constantly monitor their condition. In remote corners of the garden, adonis usually get lost and die quickly. But they look great planted in flower groups, as well as among shrubs and fruit trees.

Under natural conditions, adonis are more common on black earth soils with a neutral level of acidity, in sunny meadows and glades. If the plant falls into the shade, it quickly fades. The soil should be well-drained, loose. These flowers grow well on moist soils near ponds, pools.

When planting and caring for adonis, moderate liming of the soil will not damage; wood ash can be used as fertilizer and mulch.

Adonis is also difficult to grow due to problematic reproduction. Seeds germinate poorly: at best, less than 2/3 of the sown seeds germinate, so it is better to sow as many seeds as possible and do it immediately after collection or no more than 3 months later.

It is also not easy to propagate Adonis with bulbs, because often the “kids” do not take root in a new place. In one place, adonis bushes bloom beautifully for about 10 years, without losing the quality and quantity of flowers.

It is recommended to propagate spring adonis by dividing the bushes. Bushes are transplanted at least 4-5 years old. The best time for this is from August to September.

Growing adonis outdoors

In the spring, the bushes can also be divided, this should be done after flowering. In rare cases, transplanted flowering bushes take root well. It is necessary to dig up a bush with a clod of earth, separate the shoots carefully so as not to damage the thin roots. Divide the bushes should not be too small, the divisions for growing adonis in the open field should be relatively large.

The fact is that this plant develops slowly, and a small bush can take root poorly. Flowering begins the next year. It is recommended to remove the buds during this period so that they do not interfere with the growth of the transplanted specimen. In the second year, the flowers are already quite large, and the plant itself enters the active phase of growth.

When planting bulbs, sand is often added to the bottom of the hole as drainage. It must be coarse-grained. In the case of using fine sand, there is a possibility of rotting of young roots.

If the spring is dry, adonis requires abundant watering. The soil must be loosened after watering. Organic fertilizers should be applied before the buds open and immediately after flowering. Adonis is rarely used for bouquets. If you cut adonis, try not to damage the basal buds, as they only develop once every 2-4 years.
