Vallota purple and flower photo

Perhaps the most important sign by which a valot flower can be distinguished is the rich purple color of the base of its leaves. The bulbs of the plant are also very remarkable, as they have a massive neck, which sometimes has no border with the body of the bulb itself. When removing the upper scales, an interesting play of color opens up – the color of the bulb changes from white near the bottom to dark pink at the top near the neck.

The leaves of the purple wallot are flat, reaching a length of 25 to 40 cm. The width of the leaves is 4-5 cm. They are collected in fan-like bunches and therefore give the plant a very interesting appearance.

Baby bulbs of the wallot flower, the photo of which can be seen below, are formed above the surface of the soil, and not at the bottom of the bulb:

They “sneak” to the surface with the help of special “legs” that break through the upper scales of the mother bulb. At first, the baby that appeared has no leaves. They appear only after the baby bulb acquires its own roots, which “pull” it back into the ground.

The wallot plant blooms, the photo of which is given below, once a year, but under favorable conditions it can bloom again:

During the flowering period, a long peduncle grows directly from the bulb. It produces an inflorescence of star-shaped, tubular or funnel-shaped six-petalled flowers with attractive long filiform stamens and yellow oval anthers. On one stem, from 2 to 9 bell flowers can be located, which, after pollination, are transformed into a fruit-box, which cracks after ripening.

Wallot flower types and why the plant does not bloom

Depending on the annual cycle of the plant, all varieties of this flower can be divided into two types:

Evergreens .

Geophytes.

From the name of the first group of plants, it is clear that they remain green all year round, therefore, in our latitudes, they can grow only in greenhouse conditions or constantly migrate from the garden to pots for the winter. Growing a wallot plant at home is possible both in the garden and in pots on the windowsill.

Amaryllis of the second type, geophytes, lose their leaves during an unfavorable period. They are additionally subdivided into groups depending on the growing season: in some plants this period falls on the summer months, while on others – in the winter. Caring for wallots of different types is somewhat different and has its own characteristics.

In addition, in the genus of these plants there are real “informals” that bloom only after surviving a forest fire and heavy smoke. If the fire did not happen within a year, the wallot does not bloom, being in the same state for a long time. Thanks to this peculiarity, they got their second name – fire lily.

Vallota beautiful and other plant species

There are many species and varieties of this plant, but the most popular and often grown at home is Vallota speciosa.

Vallota beautiful, as this plant variety is also called, has long (30-45 cm) and narrow (2-3 cm) dark green leaves and oval pointed flowers. Only bulbs bloom, which have reached a diameter of 3.5 cm. The peduncle is strong and strong, most often not more than 60 cm high.

The original flower species have red-scarlet petals, but the Delicata and Alba varieties with their pale pink, white and salmon flowers are no less popular.

Among deciduous perennials, the variety Vallota falcatus or sickle-shaped wallot is popular. Plants of this variety shed their foliage completely during the dry winter period. With the arrival of spring heat, the bulb releases a peduncle with buds, most often simultaneously with leaves of medium length (up to 20 cm) and syrinas (up to 3 cm). The vertically growing peduncle at the very top has a bend, thanks to which it becomes like a shepherd’s crook. Up to ten flowers are formed on it, directed towards the ground.

One of the most compact varieties is Vallota brachyscyphus or small-flowered wallot, which is successfully grown in pots and flowerpots. The leaves of the plant reach a maximum length of 15 cm and a width of 0.5 cm. Its flowers are red and odorless, the length of the peduncle is only 2.5-3.0 cm.

Which pot will be best for wallot

Which pot will be better for wallot – this question worries many flower growers. If a flower is planted for growing children and further reproduction, then it will feel best in spacious flowerpots with good drainage. If you want to see its flowers of extraordinary beauty as soon as possible, then the pot should be selected slightly cramped.

It is also worth mentioning such varieties as:

Vallota helictus.

Cyrtanthus falcatus.

Cyrtanthus helictus.

Which are also quite popular among flower growers.

How to care for wallot and why leaves turn yellow on a flower

How to care for a wallot flower and what should be the conditions for its growth? Like all other bulbous crops, this plant needs care and certain environmental conditions. So, one of the main conditions for a good existence and abundant flowering of this plant is bright lighting.

Highly desirable for Vallota direct sunlight in the morning, but in the afternoon quite acceptable penumbra. When placed on window sills at home, eastern windows are preferred or, in extreme cases, western ones. But the plants located on the southern window sills may burn, on the northern ones additional lighting will be required.

Features of caring for a wallot also require compliance with the temperature regime. In summer, the optimum temperature is a thermometer reading of 22-24 ° C. Wallot leaves turn yellow and even begin to fall off if the air temperature exceeds this indicator. In winter, it is advisable to place evergreen species growing at home in a bright but cool room with an air temperature of 7 – 10 ° C. It can be, for example, an insulated loggia. Bulbs of deciduous plants of this species must be removed from any frost-free room with a temperature of at least 5 ° C.

Wallot flower care is beautiful

Caring for a wallot plant, the photo of which is shown below, includes proper watering:

Like all bulbous plants, wallot does not tolerate excessive moisture, as its bulb is prone to decay. Therefore, watering should be moderate, and carried out as the top layer of the earth dries out. It is better that the beautiful wallot is cared for on the same day of the week, so it will be easier to navigate the volume and frequency of watering. It is better to dry the flower than to pour it. However, it must be remembered that too long a dry period can be perceived by a deciduous plant as the onset of an unfavorable season (winter) and, having dropped its leaves, it will go into hibernation.

The soil for the flower should be nutritious, breathable and absorb water well. It should contain peat, coarse-grained river sand, soddy, humus and deciduous soil in a ratio of 1: 1: 1: 1: 2. The bottom of the pot should be covered with a 2 cm drainage layer.

The plant is transplanted as needed, and taking into account the fact that one hundred, it blooms only in cramped pots, and in spacious ones it begins to intensively raise children. When planting children, they need to be deepened into the ground by no more than 2/3, a young plant begins to bloom only for 3-4 years.

What should be the correct care for wallot at home, the photos below will demonstrate:

When carrying out it, it is important to remember that the plant is poisonous , therefore, if there are wounds on the hands, it is better to work with it with gloves. Naturally, it must be located in places inaccessible to small children and pets.
