It is a plant with openwork greenery, which always becomes a bright accent of the interior of the room, transforms the loggia, decorates the appearance of a country house. It is grown at home in pots, but with the onset of warm days, it is taken out into the fresh air. Having studied the features of this culture given in the article, even a novice florist will succeed in breeding it.

Description

Asparagus setaceus or plumosus is an evergreen herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Asparagus family. It has thin numerous smooth stems about 120 cm long, growing in several tiers. In young plants, the shoots are erect, in older specimens they are climbing.

Asparagus plumosus leaves are large , needle-shaped, bright green, in their axils, needle-like flattened shoots (cladodia) develop, which take part in the process of photosynthesis. Cladodia are very soft and tender to the touch, collected in bunches of up to 12 pieces each.

Some stems are arranged horizontally, due to this the leaves resemble ferns. However, this culture has nothing to do with the Fern family. The root system of this plant is powerful, widely spread, consists of bulbs and many shoots.

Planting seeds

Some flower growers prefer to purchase a ready-made grown plant, but one cannot fail to note its high cost, which is the reason for growing this crop from seeds on its own. In addition, asparagus seed of this species lends itself well to germination.

After purchasing the seeds, you should immediately sow them in a container with a nutrient substrate. For this, ready-made universal soil for seedlings is suitable. Experienced gardeners prepare the soil on their own by mixing peat, leafy soil, turf, river sand, taken in equal parts, with a small amount of humus. The soil mixture should be light, loose, well breathable.

Planting seeds should be carried out in the last days of February or with the onset of March. However, some flower growers do this work in the first summer month. Since the seeds of this culture have a dense shell, before planting they are kept for 2 days in water at room temperature, then a weak solution of manganese is placed for 10 minutes.

After that, they are placed on the surface of a moistened substrate, slightly pressing, and sprinkled with a small layer of earth. Crops are moistened from a spray bottle, covered with a glass lid, or with a thick film.

After planting the seeds of asparagus setaceus at home, they are cared for in the form of daily ventilation of the mini-greenhouse, watering as the topsoil dries. Crops are stored in a room with a temperature of 25 degrees.

Sprouts will hatch in 1 – 1.5 months. After they grow up a little and form a second leaf, they dive into separate containers with a diameter of 10 cm. After 3 months, they are again transplanted into larger pots with a diameter of 12–15 cm.

Plants with grown leaves are placed in a well-lit place with diffused light. Water moderately, after the topsoil has dried. Feed during the growing season every 3 weeks, using mineral compositions for indoor crops. Since the plant is developing rapidly, it is transplanted annually in April – May.
