Description of water paint with photo

An aquatic plant with a short rhizome and numerous adventitious roots that do not reach the bottom, fleshy, long, with fine hairs and air cavities, due to which the water color stays on the water. Extracts nutrients directly from the water.

The leaves are petiolate, small, rounded or ovoid, formed into a rosette. Shoots grow from their corners – mustaches, at the ends of which new rosettes with roots form, after detachment, developing as independent plants.

Flowers up to 2 cm in diameter, with three white petals and yellow stamens in the center, rise on pedicels 3-5 cm above the water surface. Plants are dioecious, with only male or only female flowers.

The fruits usually do not set.

In autumn, instead of rosettes, dense long buds form on the mustache, they sink to the bottom of the reservoir, winter in silt, rise to the surface in spring and germinate.

There are two types:

frog or common watercress ( H. morsus-ranae ), grows in water bodies of Europe and Asia, naturalized all over the world;

doubtful water color or Asian ( N. dubia ), common in East and South Asia.

Use and care of water paint

Used to decorate the water surface in summer cottages and household plots. It grows in the sun and in the shade in slowly flowing and stagnant water, it develops better in natural reservoirs, where there is a lot of food and silt at the bottom for a favorable wintering of the kidneys. Grows slowly, suitable for small ponds. Valued for its ability to purify water and inhibit algae growth.

With a lack of nutrition, the leaves are sprayed with a solution of urea. Propagated by wintering buds and rosettes, which are separated in early summer.
