HomeAbout rosesVarieties of roses: vintage, modern and scrubs

The history of these most beautiful flowers is measured in centuries, and despite the abundance of modern types of roses, gardeners are happy to grow old varieties that have come down to our times, without losing all the charm of their original appearance. Of course, these plants require special care. But there are those that do not need pruning. We are talking about scrub roses, the description of which is also presented on this page.

The oldest rose in the world and other varieties of vintage roses

Rose “Alba” . This is the oldest rose in the world, known since antiquity. The flowers are white or pink, with a strong aroma. Blooms once in June. The leaves are grey-green. The bush is vigorous, with straight shoots. Valuable for garden design, as it grows well in the shade, does not require shelter for the winter, and is not susceptible to disease .

Rusty rose, or rubiginose . This rose is found throughout Europe. The flowers are small, simple and semi-double, usually bright pink, but there are also hybrids with flowers of different colors. Flowering occurs at the end of June and lasts two weeks. The leaves are small and have a pleasant apple flavor. The bushes are erect, with a large number of shoots covered with sharp thorns, reaching a length of 1.5 – 2 m.

“Fritz Nobis” is a variety of French selection, in culture since 1940. The flowers are not very large, collected in racemose inflorescences. The color of the petals is light pink with a salmon hue. The leaves are grey-green. Bushes are vigorous, sprawling, up to 2 m high.

The rose is yellow . Because of the strong unpleasant odor, this wild rose is sometimes also called the “stinky” rose. Yellow rose bushes are found in nature in Central and Asia Minor, and this is reflected in the requirements for growing conditions – the rose does not tolerate stagnant moisture. Flowering is very plentiful, but short-lived. The flowers are large, solitary, densely double. Bushes 50 to 100 cm high.

Jone Bicolor” . Of greatest interest is the rose variety “Jon Bicolor”, which blooms for 20 days with very original flowers. They are large, simple, orange-red with a brown tint, bright yellow below. In addition, this variety has a pleasant smell.

“Centifolia” , or centifolia, is another old variety of roses that appeared in Holland in the 16th century, and today these include moss and damask roses. They came from the Gallic rose, so they are often included in the group of Gallic roses.

Centipede roses are densely doubled, their flowers are large, bright pink, bright red and white, exude a strong aroma. Flowering is single, falls on the second half of June. Leaves and young shoots are covered with glandular hairs. The bush is sprawling, the length of the shoots is 1 – 1.5 m.

“Fantin Latour” – the most common variety of old centifolia roses, has been known since the 18th century. The flowers are not very large, densely double, of a noble pink color. They exude a characteristic rich aroma. The leaves are dark green, shiny. Bushes up to 1.8 m high, straight shoots.

“Blanche Moreau” – white flowers with a green center are collected in racemose inflorescences, very fragrant. Bush up to 0.8 m high.

Moss rose . It has all the features described above, but also has green or brown glandular hairs that cover its sepals and stems and exude a strong resinous aroma.

Muscosa has been cultivated since 1796. The flowers are spherical in shape, not very large, rich pink, densely double. Aroma characteristic of a moss rose – with a hint of resinous smell. Bushes up to 1 m high, sprawling.

Gray rose, or glauca . This is a shrub with simple pink flowers collected in many-flowered apical inflorescences. The leaves are reddish, and the underside of the leaf is two-tone – half the leaf is silver-green and half is pink. Bush up to 3 m high. This is an unpretentious rose, characterized by winter hardiness and drought resistance, it can be used to create hedges and as an accent in compositions. For design, it is important that the shoots are exposed from below – they definitely need padding.

Damask rose . It has never been especially popular, as its thin stems are covered with dull foliage, and weak pedicels do not hold flowers collected in inflorescences well. It blooms in July and is famous for the fragrance of its flowers. Requires good care and fertile soil, while it is highly resistant to disease.

Among the many varieties of these roses, white petals are most common and red is almost never found.

‘Madame Hardy’ is an old cultivar with a reputation for being the most luxuriant. The flowers are silvery white with a green center, afraid of rain. The aroma is rich, sweet. Bush up to 1.5 m high, sprawling in favorable conditions.

As you can see in the photo of vintage roses, these flowers are full of noble charm:

Modern types of roses with photos and descriptions

“Augusta Louise” is a modern variety of roses with large, densely double flowers with a diameter of 12 cm, with a strong aroma. Leaves are dark green and disease resistant. The bushes are dense, strong, thick. Blooms all summer.

“Iceberg” – light green buds are collected in large racemose inflorescences. The flowers bloom within a few weeks, they are white – the color of cumulus clouds on a sunny day, sometimes with a pink tinge. The shape of the crown is round, height 1.2-2.2 m. The disadvantage of the variety is the susceptibility of foliage to fungal diseases and poor leafing.

The best scrub roses for the Moscow region: photos and descriptions of the varieties of the group

What is it – scrub roses, and what varieties are recommended for growing in the Moscow region?

The name of the group of roses shraba comes from the English word “shrubs”. These bushes grow without special pruning. Relatively recently, this group of roses was singled out from numerous varieties almost conditionally.

They have the main advantages of old park roses. At the same time, the doubleness and shape of the flower of modern scrubs is not taken into account. The abundance and duration of flowering, the power of the bush, resistance to environmental factors and ease of cultivation are important.

Shrubs, as free-growing bushes, are used for a single planting or part of a mixborder.

“Pink Grotendorst”.

This variety of scrub roses is one of the best for the Moscow region, it blooms with large tassels of small rosettes with cut-out petals resembling carnations. The flowers are double, of a beautiful pink color, but almost do not smell. They look charming in small bouquets , stand for a long time in the cut. Flower size 3-4 cm in diameter. Flowers appear in dense racemes, usually 7-15. The height of the bush is 150-175 cm. Graceful flowers appear on a bush that is completely incompatible with them, elongated, prickly, with small, pale, hard foliage. Reaches medium height, notable for disease resistance.

“Sally Holmes”.

As you can see in the photo, this scrub rose has cream flowers with a pink tint:

Soon the long golden stamens turn brown and the flowers become dazzling white. They do not deteriorate for a long time both in the heat and in the rain. Appear in racemes on long shoots of 10-40 pieces. Flower diameter 7-8 cm. Bush height 120-150 cm. The variety is resistant to diseases, but at the end of the season it can be affected by powdery mildew.

Persian Yellow.

Flowering begins in late spring and lasts 3-4 weeks.

Look at the photo, this variety of scrub roses has double, spherical flowers, 7-8 cm in diameter:

The aroma is light and unusual. The height of the bush is 150-200 cm. The bush is very winter-hardy, upright, tends to fall apart with age. Shoots are thin, somewhat sloppy. The rose should be cut very carefully. Flowers appear on old wood, so too much spring pruning will reduce the number of flowers.
