Types and varieties of indoor begonias

HomeBegoniaTypes and varieties of indoor begonias

There are more than a thousand species and varieties of indoor begonias (Begonia) in home crop production, and almost the same number of hybrids of these flowers have been eaten away. All of them are extremely beautiful and just as capricious. In order for these plants to please you with flowering, you need to create special conditions for them.

But no less charming are the deciduous-decorative varieties of room begonia – they will also decorate any room.

Family: Begonia, deciduous-decorative, shade-tolerant.

This family unites a very large number of species, among which there are both deciduous-decorative and flowering ones. Less demanding for care, but no less beautiful types of indoor begonias with large asymmetrical leaves of various colors. All of them are classified as deciduous-decorative.

The royal begonia (Begonia rex) has partially silvery-white leaves, reddish below, or almost brown in the center, bright crimson, turning into silver and emerald color to the periphery (variety “Merry Christmas”).

This begonia variety is similar in description to the Vesuvius variety, having maroon, almost black, leaves with crimson phosphorescent spots.

‘Peace’ indoor begonia has greenish-silvery leaves with a silky-copper sheen and purplish-brown dotted pattern along the veins.

Castor begonia (Begonia ricinifolia) has deeply dissected bronze-green leaves.

And in metallic begonias (Begonia metallica) – olive green with bright red veins and a metallic sheen, purple below, sitting on long pubescent petioles. Against such a rich background, medium-sized pink shades of flowers are simply lost.

The benefits of room begonia for the home

Begonias are an excellent plant for rooms located on the first floors of old houses, where there is usually little light and rather damp, and the content of microscopic molds is increased in the air. The benefit of begonia is that the biologically active substances secreted by the foliage of these plants are active against a number of microorganisms and mold fungi.

According to Feng Shui, the benefit of begonia for the home is that this plant sets people up for communication, makes them more sociable.

Begonia care

When caring for begonias, it is necessary to create warm conditions; these plants love slightly shaded rooms with high humidity.

Coral begonia (Begonia corallina) in general can grow for a long time only under artificial lighting.

To create the necessary humidity, it is good to use pallets with wet gravel or air humidifiers. Watering is plentiful in summer, moderate in winter. Top dressing can be carried out only in the spring and summer once every 2-3 weeks. Begonias are transplanted in the spring every 1-2 years, using a soil mixture of leafy soil, peat, compost, soddy soil and sand (1: 1: 1: 0.5: 1). Long, slightly leafy shoots of begonias can be shortened throughout the year. Well cuttings.
