Tulip forcing technology for March 8 at home

HomeAll flowers that start with TTulip forcing technology for March 8 at home

Forcing tulips is a special technique in floriculture that provokes early flowering in those months when it is needed. This work is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Having studied the technology, you can get bright spring flowers by a certain time, for example, by the spring women’s holiday. Distillation can be successfully done at home. The article provides step-by-step instructions for forcing tulip bulbs by March 8, which details how this method of growing these flowers is carried out, which varieties are suitable, what nuances should be taken into account in order to avoid mistakes.

What you need to know about forcing

Bulb crops are dormant throughout autumn and winter. During this period, the plants are preparing for the new season. To bring the bulbs out of dormancy, it is necessary to create certain conditions. Then it will turn out to grow flowers by a certain date. This technology is called forcing.

Tulips usually bloom in the spring after the snow melts. During the cold season, valuable substances accumulate in the bulbs that contribute to the active growth and flowering of the plant. Therefore, before forcing the bulbs, it is necessary to keep them in a cool room for 3 to 4 weeks.

Success in this work directly depends on how high-quality planting material is used. Also, the grower must provide the bulbs with the necessary conditions for a dormant period, which will affect the formation of plant organs and its flowering.

Inexperienced flower growers need to familiarize themselves with the technology of growing tulip bulbs for forcing by March 8 in order for this work to be effective and give good results.

When choosing the timing of planting tulips for forcing, it should be understood that cultivation lasts for four months. That is, if flowers are needed by March 8, bulbs should be planted in early November.

How to prepare and store planting material

Tulips, from which it is planned to obtain planting material for distillation, are carefully cared for. It includes watering, weeding, fertilizing. A couple of days after opening the bud, it is cut off to prevent the outflow of valuable substances into the emerging seed box. This will make the bulbs stronger. Tulip care usually lasts for 14 – 20 days, during the period when the flower germ develops.

After the leaves turn yellow, the bulbs that have gained strength are dug up, cleaned from the ground, and inspected. For distillation, they take the strongest, largest, without traces of rot and damage, specimens with a diameter of 3–4 cm. After that, they are stored in boxes or boxes with holes for ventilation.

Store first in a warm room with a temperature of 20 – 24 degrees for a month. After 30 – 35 days, the temperature is lowered to 18 degrees, and after another 4 weeks to 16 degrees. After the specified period, the planting material is placed in the refrigerator.

In early November, the bulbs are planted in containers with soil and removed into a room with a temperature of 5 – 7 degrees. In mid-January, temperatures should drop to 4 degrees. Rooting bulbs will last up to 3 weeks.

Features of cultivation in the soil

Forcing tulips at home is carried out in a pot with a substrate, or in a container filled with water. In the first case, it is important to choose the right soil. It should be light and fluffy. Suitable composition of equal parts of garden soil, humus, sand, peat and vermiculite.

Also the best option is a mixture of turf, peat, sand, humus, where parts of the substrate are taken in a ratio of 2:1:1:1. A glass of wood ash is added to a bucket of the mixture. Ready-made substrates for forcing bulbs are also suitable.

The bulbs are placed in containers, slightly pressed into the soil, leaving a small distance between them. After that, the substrate is filled up almost to the edge, compacted, watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Further, when caring for the bulbs, watering is carried out once a week.

Containers with rooted bulbs 3 weeks before flowering are brought into a room with a temperature of 14 – 17 degrees, installed on well-lit windowsills. After 3 – 4 days, the temperature rises to 18 degrees. When the plants begin to bloom, a cool content at a temperature of 14 degrees is recommended, which will extend the flowering time.

Forcing in hydroponics

Forcing tulips at home in hydroponics, that is, in water, is also successful, subject to a number of rules. However, after this procedure, the bulbs will be unsuitable for further growing. This method is suitable when there is no way to allocate space for installing boxes.

For distillation, they take glasses, fill them with water at room temperature, and place a circle cut out of thick paper on top, equal to the diameter of the container. A cutout should be made in the center of the circle to fix the bulbs. Planting material is installed on a glass. Store in a cool unlit place with a temperature of 5 – 6 degrees.

During the germination period, water is regularly added to the glasses, lifting the paper circle. It is important to leave a layer of air between the bulb and the water. To prevent damage to the bulbs during germination, a little activated or charcoal is added to a glass of water. After 2 months, the planting material should have a sprout.

When it stretches up to 10 cm, the flower is brought into a bright room with a temperature of 15 degrees. It is also necessary to change the temperature indicators for this method of distillation, as well as when germinating the bulbs in the substrate. By starting hydroponic forcing in the second half of October, you can get flowering plants in the first days of March.

Growing bulbs

Strong bulbs after forcing in the soil can be grown in order to obtain planting material from them of a valuable variety. Bulbs used for forcing in water have no resources left to grow, so they are discarded.

For growing, a nutrient substrate is prepared, consisting of turf and humus. Fertilizer is added to this mixture. Store in bright light. In undersized varieties, the peduncle is removed at the end of flowering, as well as leaf plates. After 20 days, the bulb is dug up and dried in a ventilated warm place.

In tall varieties, only the faded bud is removed. Peduncle and leaves do not touch. The plant continues to be watered until the foliage turns yellow. After that, the flower is removed from the substrate, cleaned of soil, dried, cut off the leaf plates.

The bulbs are dried for a couple of weeks in a warm room. After this time, the temperature is lowered to 18 degrees. A month later, the indicators are reduced to 14 – 15 degrees, keeping until the fall. With the onset of September, planting material is planted in a flower bed.
