When growing purslane flowers, you can achieve an interesting effect on your flower beds – during the day the flower beds will be full of bright colors, and in the evening turn into a thick dark green carpet. And all because the petals of these plants open only under the condition of bright lighting, at dusk they close again and “fall asleep” until the morning. Here you will learn how to plant purslane, and what conditions must be provided for the favorable growth of these flowers.

What does purslane look like, and on what soils does the flower grow?

Purslane is one of the brightest summer flowers. Reds, oranges, yellows , pinks and whites , plain and double with eyes and a border, they stand out against the background of dark greenery and earth. Flower purslane at home is a perennial plant , but in our country it does not tolerate winter and therefore is grown as an annual . The plant is creeping, up to 15-20 cm high. Juicy shoots are densely covered with small, almost cylindrical, fleshy, fragile leaves of light green color with a reddish tinge.

Look at the photo, what the purslane looks like – its flowers are regular, 3-4 cm in diameter, they resemble miniature peonies in shape.

Flowering begins 60-70 days after sowing and continues until frost. Flowers bloom only in the sun, close at sunset to shine again tomorrow with their beauty.

On what soils does garden purslane grow, and what kind of soil does not suit it at all? Beautiful, profusely flowering plants can only be grown in dry, sun-exposed areas. In the shade, the purslane does not bloom, it stretches and does not form seeds. In waterlogged places, on heavy clay soils, it grows very poorly. But he does not like heavily fertilized areas.

An excess of organic matter leads to the rapid development of greenery at the expense of flowering. Fatty (humus and compost) soil contributes to the appearance of fungal diseases and the death of seedlings.

How to plant and grow purslane

Purslane is propagated by sowing seeds in the ground in spring and autumn or in greenhouses in spring. It is possible to sow in February – March in boxes or bowls for seedlings in order to get flowering plants earlier. When planting and caring for purslane, the soil should be light (leafy with the addition of sand), since the dense crust that forms on heavy soils does not break through with small seedlings.

How to grow purslane from seeds to get healthy and beautiful plants? For a sparse and uniform sowing, the seeds are mixed with fine sand in a ratio of 1:5. Sowing is lightly sprinkled with deciduous soil and moistened by spraying. The seeds are very small, there are 11 thousand of them in 1 g, they germinate within 7-14 days. Shoots are barely visible, like thin hairs, and grow very slowly at first. Plants are transplanted to a permanent place when the danger of morning frost has passed. He tolerates the transplant well. Sometimes its most valuable varieties are rooted by cuttings. The distance between plants in the flower garden is 15-20 cm.

From seeds sown directly into the ground, plants bloom only in July and bloom until autumn frosts.

Purslane produces many seeds. When the boxes turn yellow, they can be collected. It is better to do this in the morning, and in the afternoon the boxes crack, and the seeds spill out of them.

Seed germination is maintained for three years.

Due to its low growth, semi-spreading bushes, beautiful leaves and bright, abundant flowering, purslane is considered a carpet or border plant. It can be planted on slopes, bulk beds , on rocky areas.

And how to grow purslane self-sowing? To do this, the area where these plants grow should not be dug up and deeply loosened. In the spring, with the onset of heat, shoots will appear, and the rug of unusually beautiful colors will delight all summer.
