Pachistachis flower

The genus Pachystachys (Pachystachys) is represented by evergreen herbaceous perennials and shrubs , belongs to the Acanthus family. Homeland – East India, the tropics of Central and South America. In Greek, pachys means “thick” and stachys means “ear”. The pachistachis flower is a fast-growing evergreen subshrub with a long flowering period.

Pachistachis yellow and red

Yellow pachystachys (Pachystachys lutea) is grown in room culture – an evergreen shrub with thin shoots, reaching a height of 60-70 cm. The leaves are oval, pointed, with a clear venation. An upright spike-shaped inflorescence up to 10 cm long is formed at the end of the shoot. White flowers up to 5 cm long bloom alternately from the base of the inflorescence to the top, quickly fall off.

As can be seen in the photo of pachistachis, bright orange-yellow bracts that do not fall for a long time give a decorative look to the plant. Blooms from early spring to autumn.

Pachystachys red (Pachystachys coccinea) differs from pachystachys yellow in height (more than 1 m), large (up to 40 cm long) leaves and dark green bracts, from which flowers appear with beautiful scarlet-red corollas.

Care for pachistachis at home

The plant is kept in bright rooms, protected from direct sunlight. In spring and summer, the optimum temperature is maintained at 20 ° C, at higher temperatures (above 24 ° C) it is necessary to increase the humidity of the air around the plant. In the autumn-winter period, the temperature is reduced, the optimum at this time is 16-19°C. Excessively warm air harms the plant, so it should not be placed near the batteries. Pachistachis loves the influx of fresh air, but does not respond well to drafts.

Water often in summer, especially on sunny days. The earth should be constantly moderately moist. The plant is very sensitive to overdrying of an earthy coma. When caring for pachistachis at home in winter, watering should be reduced. Spray regularly throughout the year.

In spring and summer, feed once a month with fertilizer for flowering plants.

Indoor flower pachistachis needs timely pruning and pinching. In the first year of life, plants lay the foundation for its future crown. The first pruning is carried out at a height of 10-15 cm from the soil surface. In the side shoots developing from dormant buds, the third pair of leaves is plucked out. The next tiers of shoots are formed in the same way. Having carried out a similar operation three or four times in the first year, by winter you can get a low plant with 8 to 12 tops.

After winter, before the start of active growth, all tops are cut or pinched. The faded plant is severely pruned, leaving two or three points of growth, and transplanted into a soil mixture of leafy, soddy soil, peat and sand (1:1:2:1), without increasing the size of the pot.

Reproduction of pachistachis

Reproduction of pachistachis is carried out by cuttings throughout the year, but the best result is obtained in spring and summer – the plant needs good lighting. Use cuttings 10-15 cm long with two internodes, obtained by pruning the plant. Large leaves are shortened by half. The cuttings are rooted in water at a temperature not lower than 20-22 ° C or, having previously been treated with root formation stimulants, they are planted in a loose substrate. Then a transparent cap is placed over the cuttings, periodically ventilated and sprayed.

Cuttings take root within three weeks. They are planted (3-5 pieces can be in one pot), first in small pots with a diameter of 12-13 cm with a light substrate, after that – in a permanent place, in a pot for an adult plant. Such a phased transshipment with limited soil volume stimulates active flowering in pachistachis. After the appearance of three or four pairs of leaves, the plant is pinched.

The main pests of the pachistachis flower are spider mites, aphids and whiteflies.
