Nepenthes jug plant

Department: angiosperms (Magnoliophyta).

Class: Dicotyledonous (Dicotyladones).

Order: Clove (Caryophyllales).

Family: Nepenthaceae.

Genus: Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae).

Species: pitcher nepenthes (N. ampullaria).

The jug nepenthes plant can be found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Thailand. Basically, it settles in wet places and swamps. We offer you to see a photo of Nepenthes and learn about the types of this predator plant.

Nepenthes pitcher is a strong liana up to 15 m long. The leaves are alternate, stalk-bearing, broadly lanceolate, light green, smooth, up to 25 cm long and up to 5 cm wide, shortened at the base of the shoot.

A tendril extends from the top of the leaf plate with a trapping device in the form of an oval green jug, which has a length of up to 10 cm and a diameter of up to 7 cm, two longitudinal fringed ridges, a wide neck and a bent small lid that does not close the entrance.

The plant is dioecious. Nepenthes flowers are separate-hollow, regular, reddish-brown, collected in erect paniculate inflorescences.

The fruit is a leathery capsule with dusty seeds.

The species reproduces by seeds and vegetatively by stem cuttings and layering. Blooms in summer, pollinated by insects. Seeds are dispersed by the wind and germinate, falling to the ground, near the trunk of a tree, which serves as a support for a young plant. Germination is low.

Types of plant-predator Nepentes and their photos

Some types of Nepenthes are introduced into culture, for example:

pitcher, graceful (N. gracilis);

warlike (N. bellii);

truncated (N. truncata);

swollen (N. glabrata).

But at home, they, as a rule, do not live long due to low humidity.

Nepenthes is a predator plant, and some types of Nepenthes are able to digest not only insects, but even frogs, rats and small birds.

The threat to the species is the intrusion of man into its habitats. Many populations of pitcher nepenthes are found in protected areas, such as in the national parks “Kinabalu” and “Bako” (Borneo).
