Indoor palm plants: names of home palms and their photos

HomeFor apartment and officeIndoor palm plants: names of home palms and their photos

Palm trees are houseplants that play an important role in floral interior design. They come in different sizes and with different leaf shapes, expensive and cheap.

After reading this article, you will learn the names of indoor palms and get information on how to care for indoor palms in a small space. In addition, we will give you the opportunity to get acquainted with photos of varieties of domestic palms and learn about their reproduction.

To buy a small neantha for a potted group more expensive, of course, you do not need to pay much, but a majestic kentia, capable of serving as the main high centerpiece of a large composition, will cost more. The best solution for those who want to have a large palm tree is to buy a small one and grow it, transplanting as needed.

Palms are ideal as an elegant solitary plant, undemanding to growing conditions. Both are surprisingly easy to care for in a normal room. They require cool winters, wet summers, and protection from direct sunlight. All palms are generally considered to be exclusively ornamental leafy plants, although the Neantha blooms with tiny globular flowers.

The main feature of the family is long and narrow leaves, but their width varies greatly from the very narrow ones of the dwarf coconut palm (Cocos weddeliana) to the lanceolate leaves of the true coconut palm. The plants of this group are quite different, but they all have one thing in common – an attempt to cut the stem will kill them.

Varieties of house palms: bamboo, variegated, sago and fishtail

Bamboo palms are a small group of palms that form tall stems. The name of these house palm trees is due to their appearance – in adulthood, the plants are very reminiscent of bamboo.

Chamaedorea seifrizii and Chamaedorea erumpens can grow to a height of 2-3 m under good conditions.

The arcuate curved leaves of yellowish chrysalidocarpus (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) can reach 1 m or more.

Rapis high (Rhapis excelsa) and R. low (R. humilis) are fan palms, but can grow up to 2 m tall.

Pay attention to the photo of indoor palms called “pinnate”: their fronds are divided into leaves on both sides of the central vein.

Palm leaves can be soft and drooping or hard and straight.

Neanthe bella belongs to this group, the most widely grown of all indoor palms. It can be found under the synonymous names Collinia elegans or Chamaedorea elegans.

Neanthus is usually purchased as a specimen 15-30 cm high. After a few years it reaches its maturity and a height of about 60 cm, and if it is grown in good light, tiny yellow flowers and berries appear. Neantha’s dwarf nature makes it ideal for smaller rooms.

To create more impressive compositions, one of the howei (kentiy) is usually chosen.

These are traditional palm trees that grow up to 3 m tall. Howea forsteriana grows faster, but its leaves are less curved than those of X. Belmore (H. belmoreana).

The true date palm, the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) , is not as attractive, although it grows faster than F. Canary (P canariensis) and F. Robelen (P roebelenii), used as houseplants, respectively, 2 and 1 m high.

The true coconut tree, the nut-bearing coconut (Cocos nucifera), unfortunately dies indoors after a couple of years.

Weddel ‘s coconut (Cocos weddeliana) , or rather, Weddel’s siagrus (Syagrus weddeliana), is used as a houseplant. This is one of the most attractive indoor palms, but it is not very hardy and needs the warmth and humidity of a greenhouse.

Varieties of house palms, such as sago or Cycas , resemble palms in appearance, but they are not true palms.

Only one species is grown – cycas wrapped, or drooping (Cycas revoluta). It is an extremely slow growing plant, producing only one leaf per year. Over time, it forms an attractive dark green rosette.

Fishtail palm trees are extremely beautiful. These house palms got their name for the shape of the leaves, which are about 15 cm long and 10 cm wide.

Soft caryota (Caryota mitis) is used more often – it has many leaves with jagged edges on drooping fronds.

Burning karyota (C. urens) is less popular – its leaves are more triangular in shape and there are fewer of them.

Fan palm at home and its photo

These segments can be divided completely or only partially. The leaf petioles are long, up to 60 cm or more, and usually toothed. Fan palm at home is not widespread. Its large leaves can look spectacular, but they don’t have much grace and are too big for an ordinary room.

As you can see in the photo of the fan palm, its fronds are divided into many segments emanating from a point at the base.

A variety of domestic fan palm Chamerops squat (Chamaerops humilis) is quite hardy indoors.

Other species are more difficult to grow:

Washingtonia filamentous (Washingtonia filifera) is short-lived.

Smaller leaves and vertically growing stems have a tall rapis (Rhapis excelsa), which is quite popular.

How to Care for House Palms of All Varieties

All home palm trees, photos and names of which are given on this page above, require compliance with certain conditions of detention. Caring for homemade palm trees is not difficult, but there are a few rules to remember.

Temperature: Moderate – a minimum of 10 ° C in winter. Winter night temperature should not exceed 16 ° C for Neantha and Hovea.

Light: A few tender palms prefer full sun, but all other varieties should be kept in partial shade. Neanths and hoveas can thrive in low light conditions.

Watering: First of all, good drainage is necessary – all palm trees cannot stand stagnant water at the roots. In winter, keep the soil slightly moist. Water more abundantly in spring and summer.

Humidity: Spray the leaves if the room is heated. Occasionally wipe the leaves with a damp sponge. Avoid drafts.

Transplanting: Transplant only when the plant has completely outgrown the pot, as palm trees do not like to be disturbed. Compact the soil around the clod.

Reproduction: Seeds. Requires a temperature of 27 ° C, reproduction is difficult.
