Govenia or candy tree is an unusual shrub with bizarre stalks. They taste like raisins, which is why this tree is sometimes called raisin. Govenia owes its botanical name to the German senator D. Gove, who provided funding for the expedition of the Swedish naturalist K. Thunberg, who was the first to describe this unusual plant.

Govenia, candy tree (Hovenia) belongs to the family of buckthorn. Homeland – China. Cultivated in South America, Crimea, on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. In culture, it is valued for large (up to 8 cm in diameter) fragrant double flowers.

Coffee tree (goveniya): photo and description

Govenia is a deciduous, slender, rather tall tree with a beautiful rounded, densely leafy crown. Indoors it grows up to 1.5 m.

The leaves are glossy, leathery, shiny, with a dark green color.

The flowers are small, fragrant, collected in umbellate inflorescences located in the axils and at the ends of the shoots.

When describing the coffee tree, it is worth noting that its flowers are white at the beginning of flowering, then acquire a creamy hue.

The fruits of the candy tree are pea-sized boxes, sitting on thick, fleshy, juicy brown stalks.

By the time the fruits ripen, the stalks thicken greatly, become soft and sweet.

Pay attention to the photo – the stalks of the candy tree when ripe are colored yellow or orange, and they are eaten:

It blooms in spring, most often in April – early May, but with the right content they can bloom almost all year round. When flowering, a thick aroma emanates from the govenia tree. For successful flowering, an abundance of light is needed.

A very whimsical plant, but in beauty and grace it has no equal.

In room culture, there are many-flowered gardenia (florida), and rooting (radicans).

Only one type of candy tree is suitable for growing at home – sweet govenia (H. dulcis).

Growing sweet govenia (candy tree)

Govenia sweet is a rather unpretentious plant.

Accommodation. Govenia needs a bright sunny place, but it can grow in partial shade. Do not allow the plant to be under the scorching rays of the sun. You need to keep on the southern or western windows. With a lack of light, artificial lighting can be used. In summer, fresh air is needed, so the room where gardenia grows should be ventilated often. Prefers slightly high humidity.

Temperature. In winter, they are kept in cool, bright rooms with a temperature of 5-10 ° C. Freely tolerates higher temperatures.

Substrate. The substrate is prepared from leaf and sod land, sand (1: 1: 0.5).

Watering. In hot weather, it is recommended to spray the plant with water. In summer, regular abundant watering is necessary, in winter – very moderate. Water should be boiled, warm. Does not withstand the dryness of indoor premises, needs constant spraying.

Transfer. The plant needs to be repotted once every 2 years. Excess shoots and improperly growing shoots are cut out.

Topdressing. During the growth period (April – August) – monthly top dressing with complete mineral fertilizer.

Reproduction. Seeds and semi-lignified cuttings. Seeds germinate quickly at a temperature of 18-20 °C. When the first two leaves appear, they are dived.

Govenia is propagated by cuttings under glass in February-March at a temperature of about + 20–22 ° C. Two weeks later, when the cuttings take root, they are transplanted into low and shallow pots in a mixture of peat-leaf and sod-sandy soil. At this time, it is better to limit the plant from bright light and keep it under normal moisture. In the future, gardenia is transplanted in March-April into a wide dish. Excess shoots are removed, and improperly growing ones are shortened. For better rooting, bottom heating and phytohormones are used.

Flower pests and insects cause great damage to the plant.

Since this is a very capricious plant, you need to know that with excessive and insufficient watering, the plant turns yellow and drops to pour. It also does not tolerate sudden changes in air temperature. If the acidity of the soil is not properly observed, the pouring turns yellow and shallow. For prevention, once a month, add a few drops of citric acid to the water when watering.

When spraying the plant, the flowers must be covered, as when water gets on them, brown spots appear.

Usage. Plant for winter gardens and greenhouses.
