HomeAll flowers that start with FForsythia is an ornamental flowering shrub.

Having grown an ornamental forsythia shrub on your site, you can enjoy a bright “golden fountain” of sunny yellow flowers strewn with fragile, long shoots all spring. And if you cut a few branches in winter, then by March they will bloom in a lush color in a vase . A flowering forsythia shrub looks especially impressive next to trees strewn with dark needles or foliage.

Forsythia shrub: photo and description of species

Forsythia belongs to the Olive family, there are 7 species in total, distributed mainly in East Asia, and only one species grows in Southeast Europe.

These are deciduous shrubs, indispensable in the early spring design of the garden. Bright yellow bell-shaped flowers bloom at the very beginning of spring, when the first grass is just beginning to break through. In the garden, from the still black earth, a “golden fountain” of blooming forsythia shoots beats for almost a month. The height and shape of the bush varies depending on the species. For example, in European forsythia, shoots are upright up to 2 m high, and in drooping forsythia, arc-curved branches can reach 3 m in length.

Below you can find a description and photo of the most common types of forsythia.

Forsythia ovoid , or oval, found naturally in Korea. A bush up to 2 m high has a weeping shape. Shoots greyish-yellow. The leaves are dark green, ovate with a pointed tip. Leaves turn purple in autumn. Flowers solitary, bright yellow . Blooms profusely in April. Flowering time is about 30 days. Differs in the highest frost resistance.

Forsythia drooping grows wild in Northern and Central China. This is a shrub with straight stems and arched olive or reddish-brown branches hanging down. On young shoots the leaves are trifoliate, on old branches they are simple, oblong-ovate. The edges of the leaf blades are serrated.

As can be seen in the photo, this type of forsythia has golden yellow flowers up to 2 cm in diameter, collected 2-6 pieces in corymbose inflorescences:

Blooms 5-7 days later than oval forsythia. Winter hardiness is moderate, in severe winters young shoots freeze over. The form of Fortuna, which is not sufficiently resistant and most often grown in our gardens, does not bloom profusely every year due to damage to flower buds.

European forsythia grows naturally in the southeast of Europe. Shrub up to 2 m high with erect branches. Leaves oblong-ovate. Blooms later than forsythia oval. Duration of flowering 20-25 days.

Pay attention to the photo – in the forsythia shrub of the European type, the flowers are single, drooping, bright yellow:

They appear at the same time as the leaves bloom, so the European forsythia is not as spectacular during flowering as other species. Due to frost damage to flower buds, full bloom does not occur annually.

How to grow forsythia: planting and care

All types of forsythia are quite demanding – they grow well on drained, humus-rich soils. They do not tolerate excessive moisture. Drought-resistant. Light-loving, prefer a sunny location, protected from cold winds.

Before growing forsythia, it is necessary to carry out liming of the soil and feed it with a complete mineral fertilizer (200 g per 1 m2). Plants are little damaged by pests and diseases. They tolerate transplant well. Grow fast. Often, young shoots do not have time to mature and are damaged by frost. Sometimes only the flower buds are damaged and the forsythia do not bloom the next season. When caring for a forsythia shrub, it is necessary to regularly remove dried branches.

Forsythia are propagated by seeds and vegetatively (dividing the bush, layering, green cuttings). Seeds are sown in a greenhouse in autumn or spring after stratification for two months. In the spring of next year, seedlings dive onto the ridges. Planted in a permanent place after 2-3 years.

A simpler and more effective propagation method is green cuttings. Cuttings are cut in June. Rooted in conditions of high humidity under film cover. Rooting of cuttings is high. Plants propagated by seed begin to bloom in the fourth or sixth year, vegetatively – in the third.

Here you can see a photo of planting and caring for forsythia in the garden:

Suitable for single and group landings on the lawn. Very effective against the background of dark coniferous trees. Combines well with other shrubs that bloom in early spring. It’s nice to plant primroses next to them – crocuses , blueberries. Branches cut in January-March with well-developed flower buds at room temperature are abundantly covered with golden flowers in 8-12 days.
