Canadian roses have gained great popularity among gardeners, as they have a truly luxurious appearance, lush buds of various colors, and high resistance to frost. Some varieties are able to successfully tolerate low temperatures without shelter in conditions of little snowy winters. This flower is a spectacular addition and a bright accent to the flower garden.

Description

This variety of rose appeared in the gardens of domestic and foreign gardeners thanks to many years of painstaking work of Canadian breeders. Its distinguishing features are unpretentious care, ease of reproduction, high resistance to low temperatures.

In addition, the plant has strong immunity, which causes immunity to pests and diseases. Thanks to these characteristics, this crop can be bred in all corners of the globe. Even after a slight freezing, the flower quickly recovers and begins to form new shoots.

It is also important that the Canadian rose has high decorative qualities. The height of the bush varies from 150 to 300 cm. The leaves are large, dark green. The escape is distinguished by a small number of thorns.

The flowers are double and simple, 5 to 13 cm in diameter. The color scheme of the petals is diverse, there are delicate pastel shades, as well as rich, dark tones.

Canadian roses are also distinguished by the fact that they bloom in two waves. After the first flowering, fruits remain on the bushes, which, if not removed, will give the plant an even more spectacular appearance. In the second wave, flowering is no longer so lush, but a large number of buds also rise on the bushes. This type of rose blooms throughout the warm season and until frost.

The article provides a description of the Canadian rose, lists the names, photos of popular varieties, gives recommendations for its cultivation on the site:

“Hope of Humanity” is a compact shrub about 1 m high with racemose inflorescences, consisting of five burgundy buds with a slight sweetish aroma.

“Champlain” is a medium-sized variety, recognized as one of the most abundantly flowering. Buds with a diameter of 7 cm have a rich pink color. The leaves are small, with a brilliant sheen. Flowering is observed throughout the summer months and until mid-autumn.

Reproduction by cuttings

Canadian roses are easily propagated by cuttings, even inexperienced gardeners. Cuttings can be immediately placed in open ground in a permanent place, without worrying that they will be damaged by negative external factors. The cuttings of this culture are immune to changeable weather conditions, quickly take root and begin to develop.

Cuttings are cut in July from faded shoots, cutting them at an acute angle. Their length should be 20 – 25 cm. The lower leaves, except for a pair of upper ones, are cut off. Planting material for several hours is placed in a glass with a solution that stimulates root growth.

After that, they are buried in the soil, fixing them at a slight angle. The distance between plants should be from 50 to 100 m, depending on the height of the variety. After planting, the cuttings are watered, covered with a glass or plastic jar in order to create greenhouse conditions.

If the place is chosen in direct sunlight, the seedlings are shaded at first. Shelter is removed after the cuttings form roots and take root in a new place.

Planting seedlings

Gardeners who decide to grow Canadian roses purchase ready-made seedlings from friends or in a specialized store. It is most reliable to visit a nursery to select a seedling.

Before purchasing, the plant should be carefully examined for damage, root rot, and the presence of harmful insects. It is important to buy only grafted seedlings. For successful rooting and further development of a young plant, certain planting rules must be observed.

When choosing a location, it is worth giving preference to well-lit or semi-shaded areas, although many varieties can bloom profusely even in the shade. As for the soil, it should be loose, rich in nutrients, slightly acidic, with good drainage to prevent root rot. If the soil is clay, sand or humus must be added.

Before planting, the soil is prepared by digging, loosening, eliminating weeds. Mineral fertilizers, peat, humus are introduced into poor soil.

Landing is carried out in September. In winter, the root system of seedlings will get stronger and by summer the bush will begin to actively form buds.

Planting holes should be up to 60 cm wide and up to 50 cm deep. At the bottom of the pit, a drainage layer is laid in the form of broken bricks, small stones.

After that, they are covered with a soil mixture consisting of humus, turf, peat, wood ash, and a mineral complex. The seedlings are slightly buried in the resulting composition, sprinkled with earth, tamped, watered. The area around the plant is covered with a layer of mulch.

Care

After planting, regular care for Canadian roses is important, then they will delight the eye with splendor and beauty throughout the season.

  • Watering. These flowers are moisture-loving and respond well to regular watering. Water should be poured under the root. The ground near the bush should always be in a wet state. It is very important to water this crop on hot days. Extreme heat and drought with a lack of moisture lead to early wilting of the buds. Water procedures must be carried out before the beginning of September. After watering, it is recommended to loosen the soil near the bush, but so as not to damage the roots.
  • Topdressing. Canadian rose requires regular feeding, contributing to its successful development, abundant bud formation. It is necessary to feed this culture, starting in the second year after planting. In the spring months, fertilizer containing nitrogen should be applied. In the summer, formulations with phosphorus and potassium are suitable.
  • Pruning. If necessary, formative pruning of plants is carried out in the spring. Shorten shoots that are too long, spoiling the look of the bush. Broken and dry branches are removed.
  • Wintering. Almost all varieties of Canadian roses winter without shelter, as they tolerate temperatures down to -45 degrees well. In preparation for the cold season, it is enough to cut the shoots up to 40–50 cm in tall varieties and up to 10–15 cm in other varietal groups, spud the bushes, and cut off the blackened ends of the shoots with the onset of spring. Young specimens are covered with spruce branches. Climbing varieties are bent to the ground, then they remain completely under the snow without the threat of freezing even in harsh winters.
