Dierama (Dierama) is a genus of perennial corm plants of the iris or iris family (Iridacea), naturally growing in the mountainous regions of southeast Africa. A beautifully flowering plant, grown in greenhouses, less often in open ground.

Description of the Dierama flower

Herbaceous plant with long grass-like leaves and large, up to 2.5 cm in length, tubular or bell-shaped flowers, white, pink, red, purple, blooming on thin long, up to 1.5 m, arcuate peduncles. A photo of the dierama during the flowering period is presented below. The fruit is a small blunt box with small spherical or angularly compressed seeds.

It is quite rare in gardens, it can be propagated by seeds and corms, but purchased seedlings in pots are more often planted. The division of the bushes does not tolerate well. Requires insulation for the winter.

Common types and varieties of dierama

The genus includes, according to various sources, from 25 to 45 species, some of the most commonly used in floriculture are listed below.

The most beautiful dierama (D. pulcherrimum) , the most common decorative species, grows up to 1.5 m, with large racemose inflorescences of bell-shaped flowers of various colors.

There are varieties of white (Album), purple (Blackbird), lavender (Moonlight), purple (Nigra), dark red (Heron) color.

Large-flowered cultivar Major . It blooms in July-August, in the open ground it tolerates frosts down to -10 ° C or more, provided that the corms are covered.

Dieramas are less commonly grown:

Dwarf (D.pumilum, D.dracomontatum) , 60-75 cm high, with pink, purple bell-shaped flowers.

Light pink with brown spots fiery (D. igneum) .

Reynolds (D. Reinoldsii) , with numerous (up to 12 pieces per peduncle) wine-red flowers. The latter species is high, up to 1.5 m; in winter, provided it is sheltered, it tolerates temperatures down to -15°C.
