Davallia plant (Davallia Smith) is a perennial fast-growing fern of the Davallia family, the natural distribution area of \u200b\u200bwhich is located in the tropics of Asia, China, Japan, Polynesia, on the island of Java and the Canary Islands.

The popular names for the davallia flower are “hare’s feet”, “squirrel’s feet” or “deer’s foot” (this is how the most popular type of fern in decorative floriculture is usually called – Canarian davallia – for the rhizome covered with reddish-brown hairs).

Davallia is an epiphytic plant, it is attached to pieces of bark, which cling to thick rhizomes covered with red-brown or silvery scales.

Types of indoor davallia ferns and photos of flowers

Davallia Canariensis (Davallia canariensis) is a perennial evergreen fern with a shallow root system. The leaves are bright green, pinnately dissected, located on thin long brown petioles.

Davallia solida (Davallia solida) is a perennial climbing plant with a thin, woody, rhizome covered with filiform scales. The leaves are thrice-pinnate, broadly triangular, 30-50 cm long and 15-25 cm wide; leaflets small-lobed, linear. Petiole up to 30 cm long, glossy, brown. As you can see in the photo of davallia, this is the most highly decorative species, it is used as an ampelous plant.

Davallia Fijian (Davallia fejeensis) – a plant with creeping brown roots covered with white fluff, up to 90 cm long. Growing up through the soil, they get out of the pot, hanging over the edge. The leaves are light green, leathery, triangular in shape, up to 30 cm long, located on dark filiform petioles. Every year, the plant sheds fronds, and new ones appear to replace them.

Davallia dissected (Davallia dissecta) is a herbaceous epiphyte with a creeping rhizome densely covered with reddish-brown scales. Leaves up to 30 cm long are located on straw-colored petioles. The segments of this indoor davallia fern are openwork, lobed, wedge-shaped at the base.

Davallia Mariesa (Davallia mariesii) is a 15-25 cm tall plant. Despite the fact that this species is winter-hardy, it is usually grown in a cold greenhouse. Its light green fronds are triangular and quadruple pinnate. A thin rhizome, covered with red-brown scales, is intertwined in a complex ornament.

Davallia care at home

Indoor fern dawllia prefers bright diffused light with protection from direct midday sunlight. It grows well without shading only on the east window. In summer they are kept at a temperature of 18-20°C, in winter – about 15°C. Maintains decrease in temperature to 3-5 °C. For dense dawllia and bubbly dawllia, the optimum temperature all year round is 18-22°C. Lowering the temperature can cause the death of plants.

When caring for davallia at home, the plant is watered with settled soft water, abundantly in summer, moderately in winter, the soil should be slightly moist all the time. The davallia flower does not tolerate dry air, so the pot is placed on a pallet with wet expanded clay. Optimum humidity is 50-55%. Rhizomes are regularly sprayed with soft rain or boiled water.

They are fed from May to August every two weeks with a complex mineral fertilizer of low concentration, recommended for indoor decorative and deciduous plants.

Transplanted in the spring, when the roots fill the entire pot. The soil should be slightly acidic (pH 6.5). The soil mixture is prepared from light soddy and leafy soil, peat, sphagnum and sand (1: 2: 2: 1: 1).

Reproduction of davallia

Reproduction of davallia is carried out by dividing the rhizome, the pieces of which are rooted in moist soil. The plant is divided into parts, each of which should have roots and fronds. A piece of rhizome is strengthened on the surface of the substrate with the help of bark and expanded clay. Roots appear in about two months.

Diseases root rot with excess moisture, fungal and bacterial spotting, nematodes. Pests: whitefly, aphids, scale insects, scale insects, spider mites, thrips.
