Plant type: perennial.

Description: This is a hardy plant that grows in the wild in North America, China, Japan, Kamchatka and Mongolia. The sprouts rising above the lacy, basal leaves produce magnificent white flowers. Some species of this plant have dark purple, almost black leaves. Not all varieties of cimicifuga are hardy and they usually bloom between May and August. In height, these perennials grow from 25 to 60 cm. There are also higher varieties, such as cimicifuga racemosa .

  • Origin: North America, China, Japan.
  • Foliage: broad, long, green.
  • Care: easy.
  • Lighting: partial shade, also cimicifuga grows well in full shade.
  • Fertilizers: Feeding is necessary in the spring.

Flowering: summer. The flowers appear on erect sprouts, are white in color and have a pleasant smell.

Soil Type: The soil should be rich in nutrients. Dig up the soil to a depth of 30 cm, add a 7 cm layer of compost and a 3 cm layer of sand. The compost will provide the necessary nutrients for the plant, and the sand will keep the soil well-drained. Dig a hole the same depth as the pot, but 3-6 cm wider. The acidity level of the soil should be between 5 and 6. Mulching with leafy humus will have a positive effect.

Watering: The plant should be watered with the equivalent of 3 cm of rain water once a week.

Reproduction: carried out by planting seeds or division. If you intend to grow Cimicifuga in the garden by planting seeds, fresh seeds should be planted in the spring in a shady location. The soil must be saturated with humus. If you want to reproduce indoors , fresh seeds should be stored at 13-15°C. Then for the next two months, the seeds should be placed in a bag and kept in the refrigerator. After that, you can plant the seeds at 15°C. The seed germination period varies from one month to a year. It is necessary to transplant seedlings into the garden after the last frost or in autumn.

If you plan to propagate cimicifuga by division, then this should only be done with those plants that are at least three years old. In early spring, dig up a flower without damaging the root, divide it into two or three parts with roots and plant each of them separately. Thus, in your garden in summer or autumn there will be a large number of white flowers. The distance between plants should be from 60 to 90 cm.

Planting: Take the plant out of the pot, straighten its roots, and then plant it in a dug hole that is enriched with organic fertilizer. Backfill the hole so that the roots are completely buried. Pack the soil and water the flower well.

Application: Cimicifuga flower is used in landscape design and looks great in borders in combination with other garden flowers. Also, this plant is used for medicinal purposes, for example, in the treatment of ailments associated with menopause.

Optional: by the end of the season, remove dead flowers at the base of the perennial. As mentioned above, it is desirable to mulch the soil. But at the base of the plant, it is necessary to leave a little space (about 2 cm) and not mulch the soil. Due to this, moisture can evaporate and the flower will not rot. Mulching also helps keep weeds out.
