Ammi ( Ammi ) is a herbaceous annual and biennial plant belonging to the Umbelliferae family. Under natural conditions, it grows in Africa, the Mediterranean. This culture does not have bright beauty, but will be able to decorate nondescript parts of the garden. It is valued for its ability to grow in any conditions, unpretentiousness in care, as well as for its valuable properties. Ammi grass is used for medicinal purposes, making decoctions and infusions from the dried parts of the plant.

Description

Ammi is a large spreading shrub with straight, highly branched hollow stems. Reaches up to 1.5 m in height. A few leaves are pinnate, dissected into two or three lobes. The lobes of the leaf plates are broadly lanceolate, with teeth along the edge, rich green in color.

The inflorescences of this culture are very large, umbellate, 10 – 15 cm in diameter. Consists of small white flowers. Flowering begins at the beginning or in the middle of summer, depending on the climate, continues until September.

The fruit is a narrow oval achene with a smooth surface. It ripens in late summer – early autumn, after which it cracks and splits into 2 semi-fruits.

The plant has a tap root system with a strong central root and thin lateral roots. The root goes deep into the soil layers, due to this, Ammi does without watering for a long time and feels great at the same time, continuing to develop and bloom.

Kinds

Ammi is big. It is an annual plant 100 – 150 cm high. It consists of straight hollow furrowed strongly branching stems. The leaves are pinnate, alternately arranged, formed on the stem in small quantities. Inflorescences are complex umbrellas with a diameter of 20 cm. They consist of small white flowers. Flowering lasts from early June to late September. This species is drought tolerant, frost tolerant, and prefers open sunny areas.

Ammie tooth. A two-year view about 1 m high. It has hollow ribbed stems branching in the upper part. The leaves are pinnately dissected, divided into small segments. The inflorescence is umbellate, 7 cm in diameter, with numerous white flowers that have an unpleasant odor. Flowering lasts from July to August. The fruits of the ammi tooth are oval-elongated vines about 2.5 mm long, which, when ripe, are divided into 2 slightly curved gray-green semi-fruits. Fruiting occurs in August – September.

Ammi Wisnaga. It looks like dill. It is a dense curtain, consisting of strong hollow stems covered with dissected leaves. Reaches 70 – 90 cm in height. Inflorescences – large umbrellas include many greenish-white flowers. This species begins to bloom in mid-summer.

Ammi Silver Tent. An annual sprawling shrub with numerous strong hollow ribbed stems branching at the top. Reaches 100 cm in height. Inflorescences are lush umbrellas with a diameter of 15 cm. It is distinguished by a long growing season. Flowering begins in early summer. Inflorescences remain decorative after flowering due to bright green seed pods remaining on the bush until fully ripe. Ammi Silver Tent takes up a lot of space, so other plants should be planted no closer than 1 m from this crop.

Growing from seed

New ammi plants are obtained using seed material that has a high germination rate. Before sowing the seeds of this crop, you should hold them in a glass of warm water to wash off essential oils that delay germination from their surface. You can place the seeds for a day in a damp cloth, which you need to put on a saucer, and periodically water it with water.

Seeds are buried 1.5 – 2 cm into a loose fertile substrate, watered, covered with polyethylene to create conditions close to greenhouse ones. For germination, clean in a warm place with bright lighting.

After the appearance of sprouts, the shelter is removed, the seedlings are transferred to the windowsill, where it will be well lit. The air temperature should be 13 – 16 degrees. You can take out the seedlings on the loggia or veranda. The care of young plants should include regular watering and at least 2 fertilizing with mineral compounds.

After the snow has completely melted, you can plant seedlings on the site. Before this, it is necessary to introduce humus into the soil and dig it up. Make the holes large enough for the root system to fit freely in them.

Care

  • Location. This culture is successfully developing and pleases the eye with lush flowering in sunny areas and in partial shade. It does not impose special requirements on the soil, since it grows well even on poor substrates. It will maximally show decorative effect on loose nutritious slightly acidic areas.
  • Watering. The plant is moisture-loving, despite the fact that it can do without water for a long time. When breeding it, regular abundant watering is recommended. Any water can be used, which will not affect ammi in any way. The flower will respond positively to loosening the earth after watering and weeding.
  • Topdressing. Apply organic fertilizer before planting. Twice a season, the substrate is enriched with a mineral composition for flowering garden plants.

Breeding problems

Despite the unpretentiousness of the ammi flower to growing conditions, due to improper care, it can get sick. Excess moisture in the soil leads to rotting of the roots and death of the bush.

To prevent this, you should not plant this crop in lowlands with a close occurrence of groundwater, and you should not overdo it with irrigation, and carry out water procedures only after the top layer of the earth has dried.

In shaded areas, the bush stretches, but does not grow in width. Flowering is very poor. Often, with a lack of light, the plant refuses to bear fruit.

If ammi does not have enough space, the inflorescences become smaller, the flower loses its attractiveness. At the same time, its immune system is weakened, which leads to the attack of harmful insects and the development of diseases.
