Orchid Vanda ( Vanda ) is familiar to many connoisseurs of epiphytic plants, as it is suitable for growing at home, and there are no difficulties in caring for it. The main thing during the breeding of a flower is to take into account its individual characteristics and preferences. This very spectacular orchid is used as an original interior accent, in addition, it is given to women by March 8th. It is noteworthy that this exquisite flower can grow both in the ground and without it, receiving nutrients even from the air.

Description

Orchid Vanda is an epiphytic vine with a vertically growing stem that has one growth point at the top. In the conditions of an apartment, it grows up to no more than 100 cm. It is distinguished by a powerful, highly branched root system, consisting of many strong long roots of a gray-green color, covered with a layer of dead cells.

The shoot of this culture is cylindrical, densely covered with leaves alternately located on it. The leaf plates are compacted, fleshy, belt-like, bright green. One sheet is formed throughout the month. Old leaves die off.

At the base of the last regrown leaf, a tall straight peduncle is formed with a loose racemose inflorescence. Each inflorescence contains from 2 to 10 or more flowers with petals of one or more shades.

There are fancy patterns on the petals, consisting of dots, strokes, specks, stripes, spots. The diameter of the Vanda orchid flowers is 10 – 15 cm, the petals with rounded edges are located in the same plane.

It is noteworthy that the newly blossomed buds are small in size and faded in color, but every day they become larger and brighter. Despite the fact that the color palette of inflorescences is diverse, purple, blue, light blue, burgundy, and white tones still prevail.

The timing and duration of flowering of this orchid depends on the cultivar. Some varieties bloom 1 month, others 2 and 3 months. Abundant bud formation occurs in the summer, when the flower is under bright light for a long time. In favorable conditions, Wanda is able to bloom 2 to 3 times a year.

It is impossible not to note the life expectancy of this culture, which at home with proper care is up to 30 years. This flower does not need a dormant period. Foliage develops throughout the year, with the exception of the flowering period.

Kinds

Blue ( Coerulea ). This variety reaches 100 cm in height. It is distinguished by the presence of a powerful root system, consisting of many strong developed roots. The leaves of the Vanda blue orchid are dense, narrow, belt-like, with an oblique cut in the upper part, with a smooth shiny surface, light green in color. Their length is 15 – 20 cm. In the axils of the upper leaf plates, straight flower stalks about half a meter long develop. On each peduncle, racemose inflorescences are formed, containing from 2 to 15 flowers with a diameter of 11 cm. The petals are blue in color, dotted with a mesh burgundy pattern, giving the plant an original exotic look. Gradually, the color of the flowers fades, changing to a light blue tone. This variety begins to bloom in early – mid-autumn.

Rolled (Vanda teres). Differs in abundant flowering. On one peduncle, up to 20 buds with a diameter of 6 cm develop, with petals of a pale blue color, on which a pattern resembling a grid is applied. The lip is miniature, purple. Leaf plates are rough, dense, dark green.

Tender ( Suaris ). One of the most beautiful types of orchids, characterized by spectacular flowering. Large buds are formed on the plant with snow-white petals covered with purple dots. On one peduncle develops from 10 to 12 flowers. This variety begins to bloom in the spring months.

Sandera ( Sanderiana ). An expressive view of the Wanda orchid, which is a plant with a height of 100 – 120 cm. It has a strong, rapidly growing root system. The leaves are dense, fleshy, narrow, elongated, forked at the end, rich green, up to 35 cm long. The flowers are very beautiful, large, up to 15 cm in diameter. The lower petals are light pink, the lower ones are yellow, dotted with a red mesh pattern.

White ( White ). Orchid white Vanda is a plant with a high stem, reaching 80 – 100 cm in height. The leaves are elongated, xiphoid, dense, leathery, light green. The arrangement of the foliage is alternate. Peduncles can be straight or slightly deviated to the side. The flowers are large, boiled white. On one inflorescence develops 5 – 12 buds. Flowering is observed twice a year – in spring and autumn.

Growing features

Since Vanda has a strong root system, it lives comfortably attached to the bark of a tree. For the successful development of this culture, it is necessary to receive enough light, oxygen and some water. However, the slightest excess of moisture leads to rotting of the roots, for this reason the plant is rarely grown in substrates.

Caring for a Vanda orchid in empty glass vases has its own characteristics, and is slightly different from the standard when the flower is grown in soil. Also, it is simply suspended from any support, fixing it by the stem.

The root system is placed inside a glass vase, while the aerial part remains on top of the container. Thus, the orchid will receive enough light.

Watering. When caring for the Wanda orchid, when growing it at home, watering is carried out, performing this work in three stages. It is important to follow each of them:

  1. Pour settled or filtered water at room temperature into a vase.
  2. Keep the roots in water for 10 minutes.
  3. After the specified time, drain the water.

It is not recommended to wet leaves and buds. If water gets on them, wipe these parts of the plant with a napkin. Water procedures should be carried out 1 – 2 times a week, depending on the air temperature in the room where the flower is kept.

If the orchid is grown in a hanging basket or simply fixed on any surface, it is placed under the shower to saturate it with moisture. Water with warm water until the root system acquires a greenish color. After that, the water is allowed to drain, and the roots dry slightly, then the flower is placed in its place.

If the room has dry air and high temperatures, daily spraying of the roots is necessary.

When breeding Vanda orchids in a pot with soil, watering should be carried out only as the top layer of the substrate dries. In the warm season, this work is performed every other day, in the cold season – 2 times a week. Watering is carried out using a watering can. Excess water from the pan is immediately drained.

Some flower growers immerse the orchid pot in a basin of water for half a minute. Water should reach the edge of the pot and not higher, otherwise the soil will “float away”. The pot is taken out of the water, the excess water is allowed to drain.

Air humidity. For a comfortable existence of this culture, an increased humidity of 60 – 70% is necessary. In order to achieve such indicators, a humidifier is kept in the room, or the room is sprayed several times a day using a spray gun.

Topdressing. This crop responds positively to fertilizer. Feeding is especially necessary in the spring and summer, when the plant is actively developing, forming new shoots on the roots. Young specimens under 2 years old are fed every two weeks, older plants – once a month. Fertilizer is diluted in water and applied during watering or spraying a flower. Use special mineral complexes for orchids. Wanda is especially benefited by top dressing with succinic acid, which contributes to the early and abundant flowering of an exotic beauty.

Pruning. Pruning is necessary for tall varieties in order to reduce the length of the stem. After this procedure, the plant forms a new shoot. You can carry out this work immediately after flowering. In addition, you can remove the peduncle.

Transfer. When growing an orchid in a pot, one cannot do without periodic transplants, which will be required if the roots of the plant no longer fit in the previous container, or it’s time to change the substrate to a fresh one.

In the first case, they take a slightly larger pot compared to the one that was. The soil should be loose, light, nutritious. The best option would be ready-made soil, sold for orchids. During transplantation, carefully examine the roots, cut off the damaged ones. Placing the plant in a pot, the roots are straightened, sprinkled with a layer of earth, moss is laid on top.

Rest period. The orchid needs rest, during which it will gain strength and prepare for a new wave of flowering. The rest period usually takes place in the autumn-winter months. At this time, the flower should be removed in a cool place. Watering should be reduced to 1 time in two weeks. Feeding and spraying are not required. It is recommended to keep the roots of this culture in water every week during the dormant period. This procedure is carried out for 5 – 10 minutes.

Knowing how to care for the Wanda orchid, you can succeed in this work and become the owner of a rare, very beautiful flower.
