The genus Koleria (Kohleria) belongs to the Gesneriaceae family, which are common in South and Central America. Named after M. Kohler, teacher of natural sciences from Zurich (XIX century).

Coleria are perennial herbaceous plants or shrubs with scaly, tuberous rhizomes. Leaves are pubescent. Flowers koleriya solitary or collected in an inflorescence – an umbrella or a brush.

In culture, there are more than a dozen species of the koleria plant (their photos are presented in our photo gallery below).

Koleriya foxglove (Kohleria digitaliflora) – a plant with white densely pubescent shoots. The leaves are green, covered with dense short hairs. The flowers are white with a pinkish tint. The pharynx at the corolla is green with purple spots on the limb. On an adult plant, up to 15 flowers are formed. Blooms in August-September.

Koleriya pleasant (Kohleria amabilis) is distinguished by wide ovate leaves up to 10 cm long. Their color is silver-green with brownish-purple stripes along the veins. The flowers are small, bright pink with crimson spots on the petals.

Koleria spikelet (Kohleria spicata) is a miniature plant. The leaves are elongated, the flowers are red, orange in the throat, located on long stems.

Kohleria bogotensis reaches a height of 60 cm. The leaves are broadly oval, 3-7 cm long, with white-motley pubescence along the veins. Drooping flowers solitary or collected in pairs. The corolla tube is about 2 cm long, reddish, orange-reddish below, yellowish inside the pharynx, with red spots and stripes. Blooms profusely in July-September.

Kohleria hirsuta is a perennial herbaceous plant with bronze foliage and tubular flowers, red on the outside, yellow in the throat with a bright red speck.

Fluffy- flowered koleriya (Kohleria eriantha) – a plant up to 45 cm high. The leaves are dark green, covered with a reddish fluff along the edge. The leaf shape is broadly lanceolate, up to 6-7 cm long. The flowers of this species are orange-red with white or yellow spots on the petals.

Caring for your color at home

The optimal place for placing plants is windows of western or eastern orientation. Plants shade on the southern windows. In spring and summer they are kept at a temperature of 22-26°C, in winter – at 16-18°C.

Water the koleria during the period of active growth with soft settled water as the topsoil dries up. Reduce watering in autumn. In winter, watered without drying out the clod of earth. The ingress of moisture on the leaves is undesirable.

When caring for koleri at home, it is necessary to provide high humidity, but it is not recommended to spray the plants. A pot with a plant is placed on a pallet filled with expanded clay with water or wet peat. The bottom of the pot should not touch the water.

From spring to autumn, they are fed every week with a complex mineral fertilizer. Plants are not fertilized in autumn and winter.

Transplanted as needed, when the roots of the plant will braid a clod of earth. Pots use wide and shallow. The soil mixture for adult plants is made up of leaf, sod, humus soil and sand (2: 3: 1: 1). Pieces of charcoal are added to the soil and drainage. For young plants, soddy soil is not added to the substrate.

Color reproduction

Propagated by seeds, apical cuttings and division of rhizomes. Seeds are sown in January-February superficially, without falling asleep from above with earth. The soil mixture is prepared from leafy soil and sand (1: 0.5). Crops are watered through a fine strainer, covered with glass, aired daily until germination. Maintain a temperature of 22-24°C. When propagating the coloria, the seedlings dive twice, planting them in pots one at a time.

Cuttings (tops of shoots) are rooted in sand or a mixture is prepared from equal parts of sand and leafy soil, watered and covered with a transparent cap. Accelerate the process of rooting bottom heating and root formation stimulants. Cuttings take root in 12-15 days.

Spider mites, thrips, worms, scale insects harm the koleria plant.
