Trachycarpus palm: what it looks like and how to care

Palm trachycarpus is considered one of the most adapted for growing in urban apartments. In nature, these plants reach a height of 5-7 meters, in a room they can grow up to 2.5 meters. It is necessary to take care of trachycarpus, as well as for other types of palm trees: in a large tub with turfy soil, in a bright place, in a regularly ventilated room, not forgetting to feed.

Trachycarpus (Trachycarpus) belongs to the Palm family.

Homeland – China, Japan. Palms are common in the northeastern regions of India and palms of the genus Trachycarpus are common in the Himalayas. Trachycarpus takilii grows in the Western Himalayas at an altitude of almost 2400 m above sea level, where snow lies from November to April.

This is perhaps the most popular palm tree on the entire Black Sea coast of the Caucasus – from Sochi to Batumi. It is she who most often we see on the streets of coastal southern cities. She has a thin long trunk and beautiful fan leaves. Old specimens are quite high – they are higher than a two-three-story house. The plant bears fruit annually and profusely. All year round on the top of the trunk you can find large clusters of black and blue small fruits of spherical shape (they do not fall off for a long time after ripening).

Each fruit is slightly larger than a pea. These fruits are readily eaten by birds. In the garden, you can also find self-sowing trachycarpus – small palm trees with narrow leaves that bear little resemblance to the leaves of adult palm trees.

You see these “kids” literally in all corners of the garden. The palm tree is spread by birds that eat the fruit.

Sometimes birds “sow” even on the branches of old trees. And then, high above the ground, somewhere in the fork of thick boughs of a mighty beech or hornbeam, small green palm trees appear.

To grow trachycarpus at home, you can dig out small specimens from the ground and plant them in a room – normal palm trees will grow from them.

Trachycarpus Martius and Fortune

Trachycarpus looks like a huge fan. Its appearance corresponds to the palm family. A plant with a tall unbranched stem. The trunk of a palm tree is covered with a “fur coat”, i.e. brown fibers – the remains of dead leaves.

At the top of the trunk grows a bunch of fan-shaped leaves with a diameter of up to 90 cm, a leaf stalk up to 1 m long, has thorns.

As can be seen in the photo, the leaves of the trachycarpus are hard, dark green, deeply dissected into lobes:

The flowers are inconspicuous, yellow-green, numerous, collected in large paniculate inflorescences. Blooms in May-June.

The fruit is a black berry the size of a wild cherry.

Martius (T. martianus), T. Fortune (T. fortunei) rarely blooms indoors.

Trachycarpus is one of the palm trees most adapted to room conditions. The most common are two types of this plant.

Trachycarpus Martius is a palm tree with a straight trunk covered with brown-brown fibers left over from dead leaves.

The leaves are fan-shaped, dark green, with an erasable bluish bloom from below, and their segments are two-incised. Inflorescence axillary, white flowers. The homeland of the plant is the Eastern Himalayas, Burma, Assam in India. This palm tree grows in humid subtropical forests.

Trachycarpus Fortuna differs from the previous species in more deeply dissected, green leaves on both sides.

The flowers are yellow, fragrant, the fruit is a blue-black berry with a grayish bloom.

These photos show trachycarpus palms of Martius and Fortune species:

Growing trachycarpus palm at home

Location. In care, trachycarpus are unpretentious. They can grow in any lighting conditions, but prefer a bright place protected from direct sunlight. Dry air resistant.

Trachycarpus palm trees at home need a lot of fresh air. In the summer they can be put on the balcony. In winter, the location should be bright, well-ventilated, the temperature is preferably low. If the plant overwinters in a cool place, then it should be watered sparingly, only so that the earth does not dry out completely.

With regard to all palm trees, there is such an observation: they are quite unpretentious, and if you place a young palm tree in any room, it will adapt to any microclimate. But if you put her in other conditions, she will get sick, even if these conditions are ideal. Flower growers know that palm trees do not like to change places.

Temperature. When caring for trachycarpus at home, the plant is not demanding on temperature. In winter, it is better to keep at a temperature not lower than 6-12 ° C, but it can also be at room temperature, but not too hot. Otherwise, the tips of the leaves may turn brown. Ventilate the room frequently.

Watering and spraying. Watering is moderate. The soil ball should always be slightly damp. Wipe the leaves from time to time with a damp sponge. If the leaves have turned brown, or spots have appeared on them, this means that either the soil is too wet or the plant is frozen.

In summer, it is often necessary to spray, wash the leaves and water. Dry leaves should not be cut, but wait until they dry. In winter, in cool rooms, watering should be reduced. With improper care of the trachycarpus palm at home, the leaves begin to unfold without forming a sufficiently long petiole. From this, the palm tree loses its decorative appearance and dies after a while.

The substrate is turf and humus soil, sand, peat (2:1:1:1).

From April to September, it is necessary to feed the palm tree with fertilizers.

Reproduction. Seeds.
