Rosehip: photo and description of the plant

HomeAll flowers that start with WRosehip: photo and description of the plant

You can already understand what the wild rose looks like from the name itself: the stems of this plant are literally strewn with sharp thorns. Perhaps this is the only drawback of the shrub – otherwise the plant “consists” of some advantages. In addition to the fact that wild rose is unusually beautiful at the time of flowering, its fruits are also very useful due to the increased content of vitamin C.

What does rosehip look like: description of the plant

Rosehip is the most ancient group of roses , which, as a rule, has large bushes, simple (five petals), less often terry, of various colors. They are winter-hardy, unpretentious, do not require annual pruning, relatively resistant to pests and diseases.

Used as ornamental shrubs; especially good during flowering and fruit ripening. Not suitable for cutting flowers.

A large place in this group of roses is occupied by wild roses.

About 50 species of wild rose grow only in Russia, and more than 400 are known in the world. This thorny shrub grows from North Africa to the Arctic Circle, southern Iran, Afghanistan and further east to the Philippine Islands, North America and North Mexico.

There is also a description of the wild rose plant among the Kuban Cossacks: according to an old legend, this bush grew out of the blood of a girl who, not wanting to marry an unloved one, stabbed herself with a dagger.

Below are a photo and description of the wild rose, as well as ways to use this shrub in landscape design:

It is quite frost-resistant, photophilous, exacting to fertility and soil moisture, responsive to fertilizers. Blooms in May-July, flowers with pink, white, yellow or red petals. The flowering bush looks very decorative. Fruits from 2 – 3 years of age.

Rosehip is a thorny shrub, up to 2 m high, unpretentious, winter-hardy and drought-tolerant.

Grown mainly as an ornamental plant, used for hedges. But knowledgeable people cultivate rose hips as a medicinal, vitamin, food, honey plant.

Currently, a number of cultivars and forms of wild rose have been created, which are distinguished by high yield and vitamin content, ripening time, resistance to diseases and pests . By the way, the most famous rosehip, “dog”, refers to the types of low-vitamin. In high-vitamin fruits, the sepals remain erect until ripening, while in low-vitamin fruits, they fold back immediately after flowering and mostly fall off long before ripening.

Rosehip in landscape design is used very often: the plant is planted as a tapeworm on lawns, used to fence the site.

Look at the photo of a wild rose hedge – its arched shoots are tied to a fence, keeping a distance between plants of 2-3 m:

Bright pink, fragrant petals during flowering and red-orange fruits during ripening make the shrub very beautiful.

To improve their decorative qualities, breeders have created many garden forms and varieties of these savages, which in their decorative qualities are not inferior to many varieties from the group, for example, polyanthus or hybrid polyanthus roses, while surpassing the latter in unpretentiousness in culture and use as a rootstock for roses. .

The most valuable rose hips are wrinkled rose and cinnamon rose.
