The European bathing suit (Trollius europaeus) is a species of bathing suits widespread in Europe and western Siberia. The range of its growth extends from the west (Great Britain), to the east of the continent, up to the Urals, from the north, including the Arctic regions, to the south (Mediterranean). In nature, it prefers wet meadows and clearings, edges of mixed forests and thickets of shrubs.

It is a beautifully flowering perennial, the height of which varies depending on the growing conditions. In the tundra, its height does not exceed 20 cm, while in gardens, with proper care, it can be up to 1 m. In cultivation, the species usually has several stems, one plant can have 10-20 flowers.

Description and photo of the European bathing suit

As you can see in the photo, the European bathing suit has two types of leaves. The basal leaves are petiolate, strongly dissected, collected near the ground in a rosette, the stem leaves are smaller, sessile, alternate, located in the upper third of the stem-peduncle.

The flowers are large, golden or pale yellow, up to 5.5 cm in diameter, spherical in shape, with a faint pleasant aroma. Sepals oval, wide, strongly concave and slightly deviated, up to 10-20 pcs.

Narrow petals are no longer than the sepals, have an intense orange tint, and, together with stamens and pistils, are located inside the vault of the flower, due to which its pollen is well protected from external adverse influences.

In the regions of central Russia, flowering occurs at the end of spring – the beginning of summer and is about 2-3 weeks. In damp and cloudy weather, it lasts longer, in dry, as well as in open sunny places, the bushes fade faster. The fruits ripen by the end of June – beginning of July, they are leaflets with small spouts wrapped inside.

European swimsuit is listed in the Red Book

Despite the breadth of distribution, the plant is not often found in nature; in many regions it is listed in the Red Book. The European swimsuit is a protected species throughout the Russian Federation, Belarus and a number of other countries.

In Europe, it has long been used in culture, it was first mentioned as a garden flower as early as 1581. Based on it, a number of very decorative large-flowered hybrids have been created, which serve not only as a decoration for a shady garden, but also grown for cutting. Also, the plant is valued as a good honey plant, giving nectar in the early spring (May-June).
