Ceanothus (red root): photo, care and cultivation

HomeAll flowers that start with CCeanothus (red root): photo, care and cultivation

One of the notable features of the ceanotus or red-root plant is that its various species, growing close to each other, easily interbreed with each other and produce stable hybrids. The ceanotus shrub is thermophilic, and in harsh winters it needs shelter. The flowering of the bush does not last long, in late spring – early summer, and at this time the plant reaches the peak of its decorative effect.

Shrub ceanotus and his photo

Ceanothus, krasnokornik (Ceanothus) belongs to the buckthorn family. Homeland – North America, India, Africa.

Ceanothus are deciduous, rarely evergreen climbing shrubs, some species are lianas, with pubescent shoots and small linear-pointed, alternate or opposite elliptical leaves of light green or green color, pubescent.

Look at the photo – the flowers of the red-root are blue, in some species they are pink or white, collected in very beautiful large, terminal racemose-paniculate inflorescences:

Ceanothus blooms in May – early June. More than 80 species of ceanothus are known.

In our country, c. American (S. americanus) – deciduous shrub with white flowers.

Less common c. depressed (C. impressus) and c. racemose, or paniculate (C. thyrsiflorus), with very beautiful blue flowers.

As you can see in the photo, ceanotus is widely used as an ornamental shrub in group plantings, a wall plant, as well as for decorating high fences, arbors, sheds and other buildings:

In areas with low temperatures – for decorating winter gardens, lobbies, foyers, in summer – balconies and loggias.

Care when growing red-root (ceanotus)

In the spring, when growing ceanothus in a permanent place, its main stem is tied to a vertical support, and the lateral ones are evenly distributed in the available space, it is best to arrange the shoots in the allotted place with a fan.

During the growing season, the shoots grow rapidly, so they should be tied up systematically so that they do not deviate from the desired direction. If part of the shoot does not fit on the support, then at the beginning of summer it should be completely removed, thereby stimulating the emergence of new strong growths. In the second and subsequent years, the formation continues, while growths are tied up, which should completely fill the place allotted to the plant.

When growing red-root during the care of shrubs in May, after flowering, it is necessary to remove last year’s branches to a height of 5-10 cm from the base of the skeletal branches. The appearance of new strong shoots after pruning will ensure good flowering next year. Pruning of ceanotus should be carried out annually, so that the support is completely braided in the fall, and there is a maximum number of buds and flowers on it.
