Asclepius (cotton) – herbaceous perennial up to 100 cm tall. The leaves are large, oval, located on a thick stem. Leaf growth is whorled or opposite. Root taproot, thickened. Flowers in different species are red, brown, pale pink, orange. Compactly collected in an umbrella inflorescence. Flowering time – summer, autumn. The seeds are covered with a downy fiber similar to cotton wool.

The plant is known for its healing, wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

The original range is Africa, South and North America. In the 17th century, the flower was brought to Europe. It was originally used as a raw material for the manufacture of fibers, ropes, stuffing material. Currently, 4 representatives of the kutrov family have been cultivated, which include Asclepius.

Characteristics of decorative species

Incarnate or meat-red milkweed (Asclepias incarnata L.). A plant with an angiophyllic stem, elongated leaves grow oppositely, covered with sparse hairs. The flowers are pinkish or red, with a pleasant, delicate smell. Frost-resistant.

Syrian Asclepius (Asclepias syriaca L.). “Aesculapian grass”, despite the name, has nothing to do with Syria. The height of the erect stem is 100 – 200 cm. The stem is covered with leathery, elongated leaves. The flowers are pinkish, light, strongly scented, 1 cm.

Tuberose tuberose (Asclepias tuberosa). Length up to 70 cm. The nature of the stem is similar to the previous ones. Inflorescences are bright orange. Blooms from July to October.

For active growth of these plants, open areas are required. Does well in cultivated soils. In nature, Asclepius reproduces by seeds. In the garden, its bushes are propagated by division.

Florists consider this plant to be of medium importance; for making bouquets, they prefer the incarnate vine. Asclepius bouquets are distinguished by their unusual shape and lightness. Elegant inflorescences give the composition a non-standard decorative look. Most of all, this flower is combined with compositions selected in warm, discreet colors.

Asclepius does not play a major role in bouquets, but is an original and important addition. As a gift, it is preferable for sophisticated young women and girls who appreciate sophistication.

Modest, delicate flowers are suitable for a wedding celebration. Bouquets with asclepius in the hands of brides look unexpected and romantic. Such a bouquet will attract the eyes of others and will add magic and airiness to the usual wedding composition.

It is combined with roses, eustoma, spray chrysanthemum, alstroemeria. It looks non-trivial in combination with an orchid and aspidistra, decorated with horsetail and philodendron. Asclepius fits perfectly into ensembles of peonies and roses. If 2-3 of its branches are added to the composition of white peony and matiola, decorating with salal greens, you get an excellent surprise for an evening date.
