Anthemis (lat. Anthemis ) or navel is a flower that can be easily confused with chamomile. The inflorescences of these plants are very similar. This culture belongs to the Compositae family. Naturally distributed in most countries. With the help of a bright unpretentious flower, the most boring and nondescript parts of the garden are easily transformed. Caring for anthemis is very simple, because the plant can successfully grow and develop on poor soil in conditions of heat and drought. However, anyone who wants to get a fresh, well-groomed bush should show a little attention to the navel, observing the simple rules for growing it.

Description

Anthemis is a herbaceous plant, under natural conditions it can develop as a shrub, reaches from 10 cm to 1 m in height, which directly depends on the species. The stems are straight, thin, smooth, slightly branching or completely without branches, rich green in color. The root system is taproot, branched, with brown processes.

The leaves are alternately arranged, pinnately dissected, bright green, with a pleasant aroma. When describing the navel flower, it is worth noting that during the flowering period, single inflorescences-baskets with a rich yellow central part and snow-white reed petals are formed in the upper part of the stems.

In some varieties, the petals have a light yellow and pale pink hue. The diameter of the flower is 4 – 5 cm. The navel begins to bloom in early summer and ends with the onset of autumn.

After the plant has faded, fruits ripen on it – obovate achene. After full ripening, they burst, as a result of which the seeds spill out onto the ground, provoking self-sowing.

Species and varieties

Dye Anthemis ( Anthemis tinctoria ) is a herbaceous plant with erect branching stems. Reaches from 25 to 90 cm in height. The leaves are large, pinnately dissected, bluish-green, with a wrinkled fleecy surface, arranged on the stem in the next order. Flowering occurs in the second year of the plant’s life.

Inflorescences are voluminous baskets with a diameter of 6 cm. Marginal flowers can be lemon yellow or terracotta. The fruits are tetrahedral flattened achenes.

The species has a strong pleasant fragrance that attracts pollinating insects to the site. In ancient times, the flowers of the dye umbilicus were used as a dye, with which fabrics were dyed yellow.

Varieties:

“Grillach Gold” is a perennial variety with large inflorescences with a yellow central part and petals of the same shade. The leaves resemble the foliage of a fern, have a bright green color. It begins to bloom with the onset of summer days, pleasing the eye with expressive baskets until September.

“Perry’s” – valued for large, lemon-yellow inflorescences reaching 15 cm in diameter. Blooms throughout the summer and in the first month of autumn.

“Solnechnaya Polyana” is one of the most spectacular varieties of anthemis with upright, intensely branching stems. The foliage is expressive, large in size, strongly dissected, greenish-gray. Inflorescences – baskets with a diameter of 6 – 8 cm. The color of the petals and the core is yellow. The plant has a strong aroma that intensifies in the daytime.

“Buxton” is a miniature plant consisting of short branching stems covered with openwork pinnately dissected foliage. Inflorescences of lemon-yellow color.

‘Susanna Mitchell’ is a navel that has flowers with a yellow center and cream petals. The leaves are pinnately dissected, with a silvery sheen. Flowering begins in April, lasts until the end of summer.

Look below at a selection of photos of dyed umbilical varieties to understand what each of them looks like:

Inflorescences – baskets with marginal flowers of amber and pale pink color and a yellow central part. This species blooms from August for a month.

Anthemis tranzscheliana ( Anthemis tranzscheliana ). Another interesting variety of umbilicus, reminiscent of chamomile, but differing from it in a smaller inflorescence. The foliage is fern-shaped, bluish-green in color. It blooms in May, actively forming snow-white baskets with a bright yellow center.

Anthemis dog ( Anthemis cotula ) – a type of umbilical cord, which is a bush 30 – 40 cm high. The stems are branching, straight, smooth or with sparse hairs on the surface. Leaf plates are petiolate, oval, elongated, dissected. Inflorescences – baskets with a convex receptacle. The center of the flowers and the petals are yellow. It differs from other species in an unpleasant odor emanating from foliage and baskets.

Bieberstein’s Anthemis ( Anthemis biebersteiniana ). Perennial view with ascending stems 25 cm high. The leaves are pinnately dissected, gray, with a silvery sheen. Inflorescences are golden-yellow baskets attached to long peduncles.

Anthemis field ( Anthemis arvensis ) – navel 20 – 40 cm high, with stems covered with small soft hairs. The leaves are lanceolate, divided into several lobes, dark green color. The inflorescence is a basket with a lemon-yellow center and snow-white petals. Flowering lasts from June to July.
