Alyssum ampelous – a plant with long flexible stems, grown in hanging planters, flowerpots and pots. It is used to decorate terraces, balconies, arbors in the garden. Differs in unpretentiousness to conditions of cultivation. Perfectly harmonizes with many other ornamental plants, looks especially interesting with coniferous crops.

Description

Alyssum ampelous – herbaceous perennial with thin creeping shoots, reaching about 35 – 40 cm in height. It has lanceolate matte dark green foliage.

The flowers are small, with four rounded petals of white, cream, greenish, lilac, yellowish, purple hues. Collected in dense racemose inflorescences, developing in the upper part of the stems.

This culture begins to bloom with the onset of summer. A beautiful bush, densely strewn with flowers, can be admired throughout the summer period. Varieties

There are several varieties of the ampelous variety of alyssum, differing in the height of the bush and the color of the inflorescences.

“Easter Bonnet” – a bush that forms about 25 – 30 thin flexible creeping shoots per season. The flowers are pale pink, cream, yellowish, lilac. The variety is suitable for growing in hanging pots.

“Princess in Purple” is a lush shrub with a spreading crown, consisting of many thin long creeping stems. During flowering, it is completely covered with lilac flowers.

“White Wave” – is a low plant with a compact crown, reaching about 20 cm in height. Forms a large number of small white flowers. During flowering, it looks like a round snow-white cloud.

‘Vanilla Cloud’ – This variety differs from the larger size of the flowers described above, which exude a vanilla aroma.

‘Snow princesses’ is one of the largest varieties of ampelous alyssum, which grows rapidly and is a large ball covered with white inflorescences, densely spaced. It begins to bloom in the last month of spring. Flowering lasts until mid-autumn.

“Stream” – the variety is valued for its lush long flowering. It is a fairly large, strongly overgrown bush with long stems. Inflorescences with small purple flowers.

Bicolor “Pink Stream” – a spectacular variety with flowers of two shades: the inner buds are snow-white, and those located on the outside of the bush are lilac. Planted in a pot. During flowering, it looks like a large blooming ball.

Growing from seed

Most often, gardeners practice growing ampelous alissum from seeds that are harvested in early October after flowering. Some gardeners immediately plant seed in open ground, while others prefer to grow seedlings first. The second method allows you to grow strong plants and weed out weak ones that are unsuitable for further cultivation.

To germinate seeds, they take wide, but not too deep containers with holes for draining water, cover them with a universal soil mixture for seedlings, moisten with a sprayer.

Shallow furrows are made in the soil, where the seed is distributed, covered with a small layer of earth. From above, the crops are tightly covered with polyethylene, which helps to create conditions close to greenhouse ones.

Containers are stored in a cool place with a temperature of 15 degrees. With poor lighting, additional lighting is used so that the seedlings develop well and do not stretch. The film is removed daily for ventilation.

When sprouts appear, the shelter is removed, after the formation of the second foliage plate in grown plants, they dive into separate pots. Any mineral composition, taken in a low concentration, is used as top dressing.

Seedlings are transferred to the open air after warm fine days are established. Since the ampelous variety of alyssum is grown mainly in pots, after young plants grow well, they are transplanted into larger containers. Leave in selected areas in the garden until the end of summer.

It should be borne in mind that this culture does not bloom with a lack of light, so it must be placed only in open areas without a hint of shade.

Care

This plant is distinguished by its unpretentious nature, resistance to low temperatures, short-term droughts. However, in order to remain the owner of a flowering bush for a long time, you need to follow simple rules for caring for it.

Watering is carried out once a week, trying to prevent waterlogging of the substrate and stagnant water. The surface of the earthen coma should always remain slightly damp. In case of precipitation, watering is not required at all.

It is enough to apply fertilizers 2 – 3 times during one season. This is necessary for rapid growth and abundant flowering of the bush. As the first top dressing, a nitrogen-containing complex is used. Usually this work is done in the middle of spring. The second time, about a month later, they are fed with any mineral complex. The third time, top dressing is applied in another month, using the same composition as the second time.

Pruning of the ampelous variety of alyssum is carried out in early spring, during the period of bud swelling. Cut broken dry branches, foliage. The second time this work is done at the beginning of autumn, cutting the branches by 6 cm and removing faded inflorescences.

Also, the care of this plant includes loosening the soil around the bush, eliminating weeds. To minimize the care of this crop, the area near the bush is mulched with sawdust, dry foliage, and straw. This will help retain moisture in the soil longer, delay the growth of weeds.
