Agrostemma (lat. Agrostemma ) is a flowering herbaceous plant, which is a member of the Clove family. Under natural conditions, it is found on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in countries of Asia and Europe with a temperate climate. This culture looks gentle and sophisticated due to the graceful shape of the bud and an unusual color palette with smooth transitions from dark to light. Agrostemma is ranked today among the most beautiful annuals.

Description

Agrostemma is an annual plant with straight thin branching stems that can grow up to 1 m in height. However, most varieties grow up to 50 cm. The plant is able to grow and create lush curtains.

The leaves are narrow, linear, opposite, sessile, covered with short light hairs, reaching 12 cm.

As you can see in the photo below, the flowers of the agrostemma are regular in shape, up to 5 cm in diameter, consist of five petals, resemble phloxes in structure, but have a larger diameter compared to them:

The color of the petals can be lilac, pink, white, purple, lilac. A feature of this culture is the soft transitions of shades of colors. Agrostemma begins to bloom in June, delighting the eye with beautiful buds until September.

Species and varieties

Graceful agrostemma ( Agrostemma gracilis ). An annual plant with a straight thin branching shoot. Grows up to half a meter. The inflorescences are red, with a smooth transition to the central part in light red. The buds resemble phloxes, they grow singly, but since the stems of this culture branch strongly, it seems that the flowers are collected in inflorescences – umbrellas. This species is characterized by abundant flowering, lasting throughout the summer. The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening.

Agrostemma common ( Agrostemma githago ). Variety with thin branching shoots, covered with oppositely located on them, narrow, slightly hairy, gray-green leaves. Flowers solitary, funnel-shaped, purple, with light stripes inside the petals. The plant begins to bloom in July. The bush is covered with buds until the end of summer.

The following varieties were obtained from the common agrostemma:

“Milas” is an agrostemma with large expressive buds with a diameter of 5 cm, resembling gramophones in shape. Their color is light purple.

“Ocean Pearl” – has beautiful snow-white flowers.

“Milas Pinky” – this variety has flowers of a piercing pink color scheme, due to which the bush looks bright and truly luxurious during flowering.

“Giant” – a variety of agrostemma, which is a plant with thin, strongly branching shoots. Its height is 50 cm. A large number of peduncles develop on the tops of the stems. The flowers are large, 5 cm in diameter, lilac in color, with petals bent back.

On the surface of the petals there are dark longitudinal stripes. Flowering occurs in early summer, lasts for a month. The variety is resistant to drought, but does not tolerate stagnant moisture in the soil.

Agrostemma sky rose ( Agrostemma coeli-rosa ). It is a plant with thin, intensively branching stems, reaching 0.5 cm. The shoots are densely covered with linear-lanceolate foliage with a smooth surface. Flowers with petals of the correct form, 3 cm in diameter. Collected in loose corymbose-paniculate inflorescences that form in the upper part of the stems. Flowering of this species can be observed during June and July. The fruit is a capsule with five cloves that appear when fully ripe.

Landing

This culture is propagated mainly with the help of seeds, since the seed material has a high germination rate. Seeds are planted immediately in open ground. This work is done in spring or autumn. When spring sowing, the seeds are planted in the soil after the earth warms up to 13 – 15 degrees. Immediately after sowing, the ridges are watered.

When sown in autumn, planting is carried out after the soil is slightly frozen. To do this, the seed is scattered into the furrows, the soil is leveled, sprinkled with a layer of mulch on top.

Some gardeners prefer to first grow agrostemma seedlings from seeds, and plant already well-established plants on the site. For sowing seeds for seedlings, take small pots or containers. The seed is deepened into the soil by 1 cm, moistened from the sprayer, covered with a film. Sprouts appear after a couple of weeks.

Care

After planting, the agrostemma needs care, which will allow you to quickly adapt to new conditions and get stronger. Water the flower should be moderate only after the topsoil dries out. On rainy and cloudy days, this work is not carried out. It should be borne in mind that the agrostemma is a drought-resistant plant, so a short-term lack of moisture will not greatly affect it. Excessive watering, on the contrary, will lead to decay of the root system. You need to irrigate the bushes in the morning or in the evening.

Fertilizer is applied only to depleted soil. With an excess of nutrients, the plant will actively increase the green mass, which will negatively affect flowering. Organic matter is used as a feed.

This crop has thin stems that can bend to the ground after gusty winds. For this reason, when planting an agrostemma, you need to establish a support near the bush.

After watering, do not forget about loosening the soil, which will allow the roots to get oxygen, as well as get rid of weeds that take valuable substances from the plant.

Applying

Agrostemma, thanks to its beautiful buds, long flowering period and unpretentiousness to growing conditions, has been widely used in ornamental gardening. To achieve the best effect, this crop is recommended to be planted in group plantings.

This flower is able to decorate any flower bed. The best partners in flower arrangements for agrostemma will be marigolds, phloxes, calerias, irises, snapdragons. The flower looks very beautiful among tall grasses and cereals.

The plant is used to create front gardens, lawns, rocky gardens, rabatok, mixborders. In other words, this culture will easily help to beat any empty plot of the garden, create a special mood, and will delight with beautiful flowering for a long time.
