Tiger Lily: the best varieties, planting and care

HomeAll flowers that start with LTiger Lily: the best varieties, planting and care

Tiger lilies of various varieties are commonly used plants in ornamental gardening. These bright flowers from the Liliaceae family are characterized by a long flowering period, unpretentious care, resistant to diseases and pests, and easy to propagate. The birthplace of culture is Japan and China.

Description

The tiger lily is a bulbous perennial plant growing to about 200 cm in height. Sizes may vary depending on the variety. The stems of this variety are hard, with a light pile on the surface, greenish-lilac in color. The bulbs are large, round, white.

The leaves are alternately arranged, sessile, lanceolate, 10–15 cm long, 0.7–1 cm wide, dark green, with a rough upper part. The leaf blades at the top of the stem are somewhat shorter than the rest.

In their sinuses, small bulbs, or buds, are formed, which can be used to propagate the plant. The presence of such bulbs in a tiger lily distinguishes it from other representatives of the extensive Lily family.

Inflorescences are large, loose, racemose, include from 2 to 11 flowers, shaped like bells.

The length of the bud is 9 – 13 cm. The color of the petals can be different, but there are always dark dots and strokes on their inner surface. This culture blooms from mid-summer to August.

Varieties

Based on the wild-growing tiger lily, breeders have obtained a large number of varieties with a wide range of colors of inflorescences, the description of the best of them is given below:

“Splendens” – a variety up to 100 cm high with a smooth, straight, rigid stem. On one plant, up to 20 buds of a rich orange color are formed, with numerous dark dots on the surface of the petals.

“Fluffy Leopard” – a terry variety with thirty bright orange petals, the surface of which is strewn with black dots. On one peduncle develops up to 15 – 20 flowers. The variety is photophilous, does not grow well in shaded areas.

“Lady Alice” is a tall variety, the stem of which reaches 150 cm. Up to 10 flowers are formed on the peduncle with petals of a milky shade bent back. The base of the buds is light orange. The inner part of the petals is decorated with brown stripes and dots.

“Pink Tiger” – a plant 120 cm high. It is distinguished by light pink buds with a diameter of 10 cm. There are characteristic raspberry specks inside the petals. This variety is recognized as one of the most beautiful.

“Night Flyer” – an expressive variety with burgundy flowers, the petals of which are slightly bent. The plant is cold hardy.

Pay attention to the photo – the branches of this variety are very large, their diameter reaches 15-17 cm:

‘Floro Pleno’ is a common cultivar with light orange petals with black dots. The height of the stems is 90 – 110 cm. The plant is highly resistant to low temperatures.

“White Tiger” – has snow-white buds strewn with burgundy dots. Flowers drooping, large. Flowering begins in the second half of June.

“Citronella” – characterized by a low stem and flowers with a diameter of 10 – 12 cm. Petals are lemon yellow, with brown dots. With proper care, the flowering of this variety of tiger lily lasts for 4 weeks.

“Purple Life” – a very beautiful variety with large drooping turban-shaped flowers that reach up to 15 cm in diameter. Petals are white with a purple tint. The height of the plant is 150 cm. Many small bulbs form in the axils of the leaves.

Reproduction

There are several proven methods for breeding tiger lilies. Experienced flower growers are convinced of the effectiveness of each of them.

bulbs

The most common method of obtaining a new plant is propagation by bulbs, which are planted in early spring or late August. In the second case, it should be borne in mind that before frost, the planting material must take root.

Before planting, tiger lily bulbs are kept in a weak solution of manganese for half an hour, and a place is prepared on the site. A drainage layer in the form of coarse-grained sand is laid in a landing pit measuring 20/20 cm. The bulb is deepened by 10 – 15 cm. After planting, watering is carried out.

scales

You can get a new plant with the help of scales, which are partially removed from large bulbs, then planted in moist soil. In order for the scales to successfully take root and sprout, greenhouse conditions should be created for them. They will sprout in a couple of months. For wintering, young plants are recommended to be transferred to a cool room where they will not be exposed to the sun’s rays, and with the onset of spring, planted again in a permanent place in the garden. Flowering of plants obtained in this way will occur in 2 years.

buds

Buds are formed in the tiger lily, which are good planting material. For reproduction, they are collected in August, then immediately sown in a container with a nutritious loose substrate. During the autumn and winter months, planting material forms a root system. In early spring, young plants are planted in open ground.

seeds

The seed method for obtaining new specimens of tiger lily is also practiced by flower growers, but much less frequently than those described above, since the seeds of this crop have low germination. Its advantage is that in a short time it is possible to obtain several young plants at once that have retained maternal characteristics.

Care

Tiger lily is one of the most unpretentious flowering plants, but it shows maximum decorative effect only if a number of growing rules are observed.

  • Location. The most favorable place for breeding lilies is a well-lit area. A small shade near the trees is allowed. This culture should not be constantly in full shading, otherwise flowering will be scarce, and the flowers will be faded.
  • The soil. The plant does not tolerate stagnant moisture, so planting in the lowlands is not recommended. The earth should be loose, water and breathable, saturated with fertilizers. In fertile soil, the buds will be bright and large. A good place for this culture is a hill in the garden.
  • Watering. For the full development of the flower, it is necessary to moisten the soil in a timely manner, but it is necessary to carry out water procedures after the top layer of the earth dries out after the previous watering. Do not allow excess moisture in the soil, as a result of which the root system will quickly rot. When caring for a tiger lily during the period of bud formation and flowering, special attention should be paid to watering. After the plant has faded, it will be necessary to moisten the soil much less frequently; by the beginning of autumn, water procedures should be stopped.
  • Topdressing. When growing a tiger lily, fertilizers cannot be dispensed with, which should be applied 3 times per season. In spring, the soil is enriched with a nitrogen-containing composition, in the middle of summer, and also after flowering, potassium-phosphorus additives are used.
  • Wintering. Preparation for wintering begins after flowering. Leaves must dry completely. The stems are cut, leaving a length of no more than 10 cm from the surface of the earth. Before the onset of frost, they make a shelter from peat and dry foliage. In regions with severe winters, it is recommended to use dense covering material. In the first spring days, the shelter is removed.

Diseases and pests

Despite the fact that tiger lilies have strong immunity, some varieties are often affected by pests and diseases.

The most common crop diseases:

  1. Rust. Dry red spots appear on the leaves. Solutions containing copper help to fight the disease.
  2. Chlorosis. Appears as yellow spots near the veins. Iron sulfate will help get rid of the disease. To prevent disease, the ground around the bush is sprinkled with peat or sawdust.
  3. Fusarium. When this disease occurs, red or orange spots appear on the peduncle. Fundazol is used to fight. For the purpose of prevention, the bulbs are treated with this solution when planting.
  4. With gray rot, as well as bacterial infections , which lead to the appearance of brown spots on the leaves and their wilting, fungicides are used.

In some cases, the tiger lily is attacked by insects: aphids, leaf beetles, flies, bears, May beetle larvae. If pests are found, the bush should be treated with such preparations as Aktara, Konfidor, Medvetoks.

To prevent damage to the bulbs by rodents, they are treated with Vishnevsky’s ointment, after which they are planted on the site.

The plant itself is not affected by the mosaic virus, but is its carrier. For this reason, tiger lilies are best planted separately.
