Limnophila fragrant

Department: angiosperms (Magnoliophyta)

Class: dicotyledonous (Dicotyledones).

Order: Lamiales.

Family: Plantain (Plantaginaceae).

Genus: limnophila (Limnophila).

Species: fragrant limnophila (L. aromatica).

In nature, fragrant limnophila is found in India, Bhutan, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Bangladesh, as well as the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar and northern Australia. We bring to your attention a description of this plant, a photo of limnophila and recommendations for the use of aquatic limnophila in aquariums.

The plant was brought to North America and the Pacific Islands. It grows in swamps and stagnant freshwater reservoirs, in places it forms dense thickets.

Limnophila aromatica and her photo

Limnophila aromatica is a herbaceous aquatic plant up to 50 cm tall. The roots are well developed, the rhizome is creeping. Stem erect or creeping, branched. The leaf arrangement is opposite or whorled.

Look at the photo of aromatic limnophiles – the leaves of this plant are sessile, lanceolate, up to 7 cm long.

Surface leaves – plain green; underwater – olive, on the upper side with a reddish tint, on the lower side – with pinkish-purple.

The flowers of fragrant limnophila are solitary or collected in inflorescences of several pieces. Correct, bisexual, they have a pale blue tubular corolla with a slight bend, a diameter of up to 2 cm.

The dry fruit is a rounded box with a diameter of 0.5 cm.

Reproduction is seed and vegetative – division of the rhizome or cuttings of the stem.

The plant blooms when it reaches the surface of the water. Pollinated by insects. The ripe box bursts, the seeds are carried by water, swell, settle to the bottom and germinate.

Application and photo of limnophila in the aquarium

Fragrant, aquatic (L. aquatica), heterophylla (L. heterophylla), and sessile (L. sessiliflora) limnophiles are popular aquarium plants.

For the most part, they are undemanding in care, grow quickly and create volume with delicate thin leaves. Fry like to hide in their midst, and herbivorous fish gladly include them in their diet. Limnophila is usually planted in the background of the aquarium or allowed to float freely in the water column.

In Southeast Asia, aquatic limnophila is found on rice plantations as a weed plant, therefore it is called rice field grass. Usually it is not fought in any way, since it is edible, grows after the harvest of rice and dies off shortly after flowering. The Vietnamese use limnophila in cooking.

Limnophila in Greek means “loving stagnant water.” Previously, the plant was attributed to the genus Ambulia (Ambulia). Both names are still found in the literature as synonyms.

Limnophila fragrant is widespread throughout its range. The species easily adapts to the anthropogenic environment, introduced into culture, so the likelihood that it will disappear in the foreseeable future is very small. There are no new data on population dynamics, but their numbers are sufficient for renewal.
