Hypoesthesia plant

Hypoestes (Hypoestes) is an evergreen plant of the Acanthus family, common in tropical regions of South Africa and on the island of Madagascar. The genus got its name from the Greek words hypo (“under”) and estia (“house”), which is associated with the structure of the flower: the calyx of the hypoestes flower is covered by a bract.

Types of hypoesthesia with photos

Hypoestes phyllostachys (Hypoestes phyllostachys) at a young age is a beautiful low bush, with regular pinching not exceeding 30-60 cm in height. Green leaves with red, pink or white specks or specks give this plant a decorative effect. Pale lilac flowers of hypoesthesia should be removed. After flowering, there is sometimes a dormant period.

Hypoestes blood-red (Hypoestes sanguinolenta) is an evergreen shrub up to 50 cm high. Narrow ovate leaves 5-8 cm long and 3-4 cm wide are slightly wavy at the edges. As can be seen in the photo of hypoestes sanguinolenta, the dark green leaves are literally dotted with purple-red veins and small red spots. The flowers are small. The corolla is light red with a white throat.

Hypoesthesia care at home

The hypoestes plant is sun-loving, but requires protection from direct sunlight at noon. In a well-lit place with a certain amount of direct sunlight, the leaves are variegated in color, in partial shade they become green. In this case, reduce watering until new shoots appear. Can be grown without sunlight using LB lamps for 16 hours a day.

In summer, the hypoestes is taken out into the fresh air in a place protected from the midday sun, wind and rain. The plant hibernates at a temperature not lower than 12-18°C. Hypoestes grows best in a tropical florarium or in a showcase. The plant does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature and drafts. Do not place hypoestes near heating devices.

Hypoesthesia care at home provides for abundant watering in the spring and summer as the topsoil dries out. Do not allow the earthen coma to dry out, this can lead to leaf fall. Spray regularly. In autumn, watering is gradually reduced, in winter it is watered moderately one or two days after the topsoil has dried. For watering and spraying use soft water at room temperature. Do not use leaf polishing agents.

To ensure the bright color of the leaves, from March to October, hypoesthesia is fed once every three to four weeks with fertilizers with a high content of potassium.

In the spring, when young shoots appear, pruning is carried out – old shoots are cut off, leaving stumps 3 cm high. After spring pruning, watering is sharply reduced due to the lack of leaves and the associated decrease in water evaporation.

Hypoestes grow quite quickly and just as quickly lose most of the lower leaves, and with them the decorative effect. To avoid this, during the growing season, the tops of the shoots are systematically pinched, which stimulates the branching of growth and the appearance of new, young, brightly colored leaves. Cuttings obtained by pruning are used for propagation.

Reproduction of hypoesthesia

Propagated in spring and summer by apical and stem cuttings rooted under a transparent cap at temperatures above 20°C. Sometimes hypoestes give roots in water.

Hypoesthesia is also propagated by seeds that are sown in March, lightly sprinkled with soil and covered with glass or a transparent bag. Contain at a temperature of 13-18°C. The mini-greenhouse is regularly ventilated. Seedlings appear quickly. Seedlings in three to four months take the form of a fully grown plant.

Transplanted annually in the spring, using a soil mixture of soddy and leafy earth and sand (2: 2: 1).

Mealybugs, spider mites, aphids harm the plant, they are practically not affected by diseases.
