Soil preparation: what kind of soil is needed for roses

What kind of soil roses love is one of the most pressing issues. The best for roses are loamy, medium loamy or clayey soils with the addition of river sand. Humus, horse or cow dung must be added to the composition of the soil for roses.
According to its structure, the soil in which roses are planted must be moisture and breathable, since the ability of the roots to absorb nutrients depends on this.
The acidity of the soil also affects the proper development of bushes. Roses are more suitable for slightly acidic or neutral soils.
Most roses develop a deep root system that allows them to absorb minerals and water from deep soil layers, so the site requires deep processing.
Preparing roses for planting and combining roses in a rose garden
When breeding a rose garden, it is necessary to prepare not only the soil, but also the seedlings themselves.
If you bought seedlings in pots, then they are almost ready for immediate planting. These are the so-called seedlings with a closed root system, since there is earth around them. During storage, their roots constantly developed.
When preparing for planting roses with a closed root system, it is necessary to prepare a planting pit in advance, carefully remove the seedling from the pot along with a clod of earth, being careful not to damage the roots, and place it in the pit, and then cover it with earth and tamp. In order for the plants to take root better, they need to be watered regularly after planting.
There are seedlings with an open root system. In this case, the preparation for planting depends on how they were packed.
Thus, seedlings bought in a store or sent by mail, as a rule, are placed in a box with well-packed roots, which can be in a clay mash, packed in cellophane. In this case, you must first remove the cellophane from the roots, and then place them in cold water for several hours to wash off the clay. Thus, the roots will be able to return some of the lost moisture.
Sometimes each seedling root is individually packed in wet peat. This method of storage has recently become more widespread, because thanks to it it is easier to save the plant during transportation or shipment. To prepare for planting a seedling packed in this way, it is necessary to remove the film and the protective mesh, if any, and then make sure that the roots are in good condition.
No matter how the seedlings are packed, before planting they must be placed in water for several hours so that the roots make up for the loss of moisture. It is also recommended to treat them with a Bordeaux mixture or a 3% solution of copper sulfate against fungal diseases.
During planting, seedlings lose many small roots, which is why the plant cannot eat normally. For this reason, after planting, it is recommended to cut the stems of roses a little so that they become almost the same size as the roots, while the length of the stems and roots should be about 30 cm. Also, during planting, it is necessary to feed the roses or add growth stimulants to them.
When creating a rose garden of any layout, it is necessary to choose varieties of roses that will blend harmoniously. For the optimal combination of roses in the rose garden, you can choose both roses of the same variety and different ones, the main thing here is that they have the same flowering time and colors are in harmony.

Autumn planting of roses
For the autumn planting of roses, you need to choose the right moment. The fact is that in different climatic zones, the time of arrival of winter is different. So, it is recommended to plant roses no later than a month before the onset of winter. In the northern regions, the end of August is suitable for autumn planting, and the landing site must be prepared even earlier. In the middle lane, it is recommended to plant roses in mid-September – early October, for the southern regions the best time would be the end of September – mid-October.
Directly during the autumn planting, it is not recommended to apply fertilizers to the ground. If the soil is depleted, it is necessary to enrich it some time before planting.
The depth of the hole for planting should be 50-60 cm, and the diameter should be about 40 cm.
If roses are planted in rows, trenches are dug instead of holes, and the ground is prepared in the same way.
Landing can be done in one of the following ways.
Dry landing. The soil mixture is poured onto the bottom of the planting pit, a rose seedling is lowered into it and gradually sprinkled with earth, while ramming it. Please note that the seedling is placed at such a depth that the grafting site is 3-5 cm below the surface. After the soil is covered and compacted, the seedling is watered abundantly.
Wet landing. Sodium humate is dissolved in a bucket of water and this water is poured into a planting hole, into which a seedling is lowered, and then a dry soil mixture is gradually poured. With this method of planting, the soil better wraps around the roots, leaving no air gap. The grafting site should also be 3-5 cm below the surface, otherwise wild rose shoots may appear or the rose will get sick.

Polyanthus, hybrid tea roses and the Floribunda rose should be planted at a distance of 3060 cm. When planting climbing roses, you need to think in advance about the place where they will hide for the winter, so it is advisable to increase the distance between the bushes to 1 m.
In the northern regions, it is best to place seedlings at the maximum distance from each other. Good warming of the earth and free air circulation between the bushes depend on this. With this method of planting, beautiful flower beds with roses can be protected from disease .
Spring planting of roses
During the spring planting of roses, the roots of seedlings are shortened, cutting off dried and broken ones, and buds are left. Then pits are dug, the depth of which is 10-15 cm greater than the length of the roots and, as a rule, is 45-50 cm, and the width is 50 cm.
For quick root establishment and proper development of roses, it is necessary to prepare a good soil mixture. It may include the following components: fertile soil from the beds, peat, bone meal, humus, soddy soil, dolomite flour, sand, complex mineral fertilizer, ash and weathered clay.
