Ivy is easy to grow at home and is one of the most common indoor plants. Among the variety of its varieties and varieties, you can easily choose the option to your liking.

Types and varieties of ivy in the photo: Canarian ivy and fatsheder Lise

Canarian ivy (Hedera canariensis) is a larger species, characterized by reddish young shoots and leaf petioles, as well as the inability to independently cling to a support, so the shoots need a garter.

Very beautiful foliage on the ‘Gloire de Marengo’ variety of ivy, with various combinations of cream and dark and light green.

In 1910, in France, as a result of crossing Japanese Fatsia (Fatsia japonica) and common ivy (Hedera helix), a hybrid was obtained that flower growers liked so much for its beauty and unpretentiousness that it received its own species name – Fatshedera Lizei ivy (Fatshedera lizei).

This evergreen vine with curly, woody stems that require support over time, can grow up to 5 m tall.

In the photo of indoor ivy of this species, large (about 20-25 cm in diameter), leathery, dark green palmate-lobed leaves on long petioles are especially striking in the head, very similar to maple.

Small greenish-yellow or cream flowers are collected in large (up to 15 cm long) paniculate inflorescences. Later, fruits-berries of a dark blue color may form. The variegated form of the “Variegata” fatsheader is very beautiful – with a beige border or randomly arranged white spots of irregular shape.

How to care for home ivy

Ivy is widely used for vertical gardening of premises for various purposes and decorated in any style. Ivy care at home begins with choosing a well-lit and well-ventilated place for it. Varieties with green foliage feel great even with moderate shading. In summer, it is better to take the plants out onto the balcony or into the garden. In winter, it is desirable to provide a cool content (about + 10 ° C); if the room temperature is higher, then the plant will have to be sprayed often. Canarian ivy is more thermophilic than common ivy.

Water regularly in summer, moderately, in winter a little less. Top dressing in the warm season is carried out weekly, and in winter once a month. Plants can be repotted every two to three years. To enhance branching, ivy shoots must be cut or pinched in spring. Ivy is excellently propagated by cuttings, which, thanks to aerial roots, take root very quickly.

According to the conditions of keeping a fatsheader, Lisa looks more like fatsia than ivy. It thrives in both bright and shaded areas. It easily tolerates all the inconveniences associated with room content: dry air, dust, short daylight hours at high temperatures in winter. It grows well outdoors in summer, and in areas with warm winters it can even be used as a horticultural crop. Fatshedera should be watered abundantly, regular spraying is useful. Top dressing is carried out in the warm season 2 times a month.

Transplanted annually in the spring, be sure to increase the volume of the fatshedera container likes spacious containers. Variegated forms are more demanding on lighting (in conditions of prolonged lack of light, the leaves can “turn green”, losing their spotty pattern) and grow more slowly. It is possible to form a plant both in the form of a bush, often pinching the stems and stimulating the development of lateral shoots, and in the form of a tree. Well propagated by apical cuttings.

In the cultures of many peoples, ivy is a symbol of eternal life, immortality and fidelity.
