Description

The tubular lily is a hybrid obtained by crossing Asian varieties . It is a plant with a straight fleshy stem, reaching 80 – 250 cm in height. A distinctive feature of this culture are bulbs of bright colors: purple, red, yellow, less often black. The bulbs are rounded, covered with many scales. The leaf blades are narrow, elongated, bright green.

Peduncles begin to form at the base of the bulbs. Inflorescences are racemose, contain 8 – 15 buds. Tubular flowers, up to 20 cm in diameter, can be double and simple. They have rich rich colors. Pink, lilac, white, burgundy, light yellow tones predominate. The duration of flowering of a single flower is 6 – 8 days.

Bulb selection

Gardeners who decide to breed this luxurious flower should carefully consider the choice of planting material. Before buying a bulb, you should carefully inspect and pay attention to the following characteristics:

  1. The diameter of the bulbs intended for planting should be 4 – 5 cm.
  2. Bulbs should be sufficiently dense, resilient, without any dents or other damage.
  3. There should be no signs of rot or mold on the surface of the planting material.
  4. The packaging must be intact, even, without dents and open holes.

Location selection

Before you start planting this crop, you need to decide on the place where it will grow. Since the homeland of plants of the Liliaceae family is China and Japan, where a warm climate prevails and there is no shortage of sunlight, open areas protected from the wind should be chosen for planting.

In partial shade and shade, as well as in damp areas, lilies will not grow. You do not need to choose places where there are trees nearby with spreading crowns that create shade. Areas along high fences will not work either.

The best option for growing a flower is any hill, for example, an alpine hill.

The Asian variety grows well and develops on loose, nutritious, slightly acidic substrates. Does not tolerate clay and peaty soils. Trumpet lilies can be planted on rocky, calcareous, sandy soils.

Landing

After purchasing the bulbs and choosing a place to place them in the garden, you can proceed to the planting work, which consists of several stages:

  1. It is necessary to prepare the soil by mixing river sand with humus and gravel. In the resulting mixture, apply fertilizer in the form of peat or compost with the addition of earth. Then pour some ash into the substrate.
  2. Dig a hole with a depth of 20 – 25 cm. Fill it with prepared soil.
  3. Deepen the bulb, sprinkle with a small layer of earth.
  4. Irrigate.

Pickup times vary by region. So, in the middle latitudes, this work is done in the fall, in regions with a temperate climate – in the last month of summer.

Care

Care immediately after planting tubular lily bulbs will be minimal, consisting in moderate watering. With grown plants, more voluminous work is carried out.

  • Watering. You need to water the flower 2 – 3 times a week in the absence of precipitation. On cloudy days, the substrate can be moistened less often, but the surface of the earth should not be allowed to dry out. Pour half a bucket of water on one flower. Water procedures are recommended to be carried out in the evening hours.
  • Topdressing. When sprouts appear, the soil is fertilized with mineral nitrogen-containing complexes, which alternate with humus as the flower grows. In the summer, continue to feed the plant with nutrient compounds.
  • Other care. In the middle of summer, the soil near the lilies is sprinkled with a layer of mulch, using straw for this purpose. Mulching keeps moisture in the soil longer and prevents weeds. Faded buds are immediately removed so as not to spoil the decorative effect of the plant. Also, after flowering, the fruits are harvested, which take valuable substances necessary for the further development of the culture.
  • Preparing for the winter. In late September – early October, the aerial part of the flower is cut to ground level. Ash is added to the substrate, which increases the resistance of the plant to low temperatures. From above, the remaining parts of the stems are covered with a dense material that does not allow moisture to pass through.

Growing problems

Asiatic lilies have an average degree of resistance to diseases and pests, so when growing them, you should periodically inspect the stems, leaves and buds. The most common harmful insects that attack a flower are spider mites, field mice, scale insects, and mealybugs.

Having found pests, you need to treat the bush with an insecticide solution.

Sometimes, when breeding Asian lilies, a grower may encounter a plant disease such as gray rot, which affects all parts in a short time, if measures are not taken immediately to eliminate it. When affected by gray rot, brown spots appear on the leaves, they soon begin to curl, dry out and die. The buds fade, wither and fall off.

Another dangerous disease of this culture is Fusarium. Brown and brown spots appear on the foliage, the stem begins to rot, the flowers fade.

Phytium is a fungal disease in which the foliage and root system suffer. The leaves gradually turn yellow, the roots rot, the stem loses strength, deforms. If urgent measures are not taken to resuscitate the plant, it will quickly wither away.

Chemicals are used to fight diseases.
