Plant type: shrub.

Description: family – myrtle. There are over a thousand species. Some species are grown in order to collect delicious fruits. Eugenia is a close relative of the clove tree. The leaves are used as a raw material for clove oil, which is used in the perfume and food industries. Natural conditions – subtropical and tropical zones of the southern and northern hemispheres. Eugenia is an evergreen tree, reaching six meters in height in natural growing conditions. Cultivated in a winter garden and large rooms. In ordinary apartments, only young flowers grow. The shade of young shoots of eugenia is reddish, the leaves are small, shiny, narrow, dark green. If you rub them between your palms, you will feel a pleasant aroma. After flowering, it has red fruits.

For indoor cultivation, in addition to myrtle-leaved eugenia, pointed and small-leaved are also common.

  • Care: Careful care is required.

Flowering: present. The shade of flowers is white-cream, with a diameter of up to three centimeters. Flowers are collected in apical racemes. The fruits formed after flowering are edible and have a pleasant taste. The size is comparable to a large fruit of a cherry tree. The flowers are small and four-petalled.

Lighting: Full sunlight coming from the East/West/South will be best. Evgenia needs bright lighting, and if it is not enough, then artificial lighting should be used. If the weather is too hot, then shading from aggressive sunlight is necessary. In the summer, it is desirable to place the plant in the fresh air.

Soil type: the mixture of earth should be in the following ratio: 2 parts sod, 1 part leaf, 1 part humus and 1 part sand. Make sure your soil is well aerated, if the soil is too dense then add perlite or peat.

Watering: Eugene should be watered moderately (not allowing the earthen clod to dry out), with the exception of the winter period. In winter, the watering rate should be limited. Due to the fact that the plant does not tolerate dry air, it is advisable to regularly spray it in the summer.

Fertilizer: In the period from April to October, Eugenia should be fed with ordinary flower fertilizers in small quantities.

Pests: May be affected by scale insects and aphids. If the soil is too wet, then spots may appear on the leaves, as a result of which they begin to fall off.

Transplant: once every two years as needed. The best time of year for transplanting is spring. When transplanting a plant, in no case should its root collar be buried, even if the roots are slightly visible. If the planting is too deep, the plant will die.

Reproduction: carried out in two ways: lignified cuttings or seeds. Eugenia seeds should be sown in the spring. It is best to cut the cuttings at the end of summer, then plant them in moist sand for rooting. In October, the cuttings are transplanted into the soil of the usual composition. It is desirable to root the apical cuttings in a greenhouse at a soil temperature of at least twenty degrees.

Extras: Eugenia is an excellent plant to grow as a bonsai. Constant pruning of the crown is necessary, which makes the plant more compact and adapted to indoor conditions. With pruning, the flower can be shaped into a pyramid or cone. The most suitable time for pruning and tweezing is spring.
