Coreopsis: planting and care

HomeGarden FlowersCoreopsis: planting and care

All decorative varieties of the flower are equally unpretentious and in many ways similar in terms of agricultural technology, but for some types of coreopsis, care has some features that must be taken into account when breeding them. Below are detailed recommendations for growing various coreopsis, planting and care, photos illustrating the individual stages of cultivation.

Growing Coreopsis from Planting to Daily Care

The plant prefers sunny, sheltered areas, and this is one of the few requirements that are indispensable for its normal growth and development. Only two perennial species, whorled and pink, tolerate slight shading.

Coreopsis are undemanding to the composition of the soil; they grow on any light, loose, well-drained soil. The content of nutrients should be moderate, with their excess, the plants violently increase the vegetative mass to the detriment of flowering. In addition, on fertile heavy soils, perennial species have a shorter lifespan. The culture also does not tolerate high acidity and stagnant water.

Flower care consists in timely weeding, loosening and watering in hot weather.

All species are drought-resistant, but at high temperatures and lack of moisture, the intensity of flowering is significantly reduced. Red and pink varieties require more frequent watering. They feed only when growing coreopsis on very poor soils, in this case, complex mineral fertilizers are applied in the spring and during the flowering period. Some tall varieties require tying. Especially often they wilt and fall when cultivated in rich, fertile lands.

It is recommended to regularly cut off all faded inflorescences, except for those intended for collecting seeds, which stimulates long-term abundant flowering and prevents self-seeding, in which seedlings of perennial species most often do not repeat the characteristics of the parent variety.

At the end of the season, all perennial coreopsis are completely pruned, except for many-flowered ones, the latter, after a short pruning, may suffer from frost. In the middle lane, plants winter well without shelter, but they do not tolerate waterlogging during thaws, so good drainage is especially important for them. In the northern areas of planting, mulch with a thin layer of dry foliage.

Coreopsis: growing from seeds

All species are propagated by seeds, perennials – also by division. When grown from seeds, coreopsis are usually sown directly into the ground in April, or before winter.

When planting in spring, seedlings appear in two weeks. When planting in spring, seedlings appear in two weeks.

When planting in spring, seedlings appear in two weeks. To get flowering in the current season, you can grow a crop through seedlings. In regions with short summers, this breeding method is also preferred for annuals.

Seeds for seedlings are sown at the end of March, laying them out on the surface of bowls with fertile soil. Seedlings with two true leaves dive, planting for the first time at a distance of 2×2 cm, then, when they grow up, placing 4 pcs. in separate pots with a diameter of 10-12 cm. For a permanent place in the garden, seedlings, after preliminary hardening, are planted at the end of May, observing an interval of 20-50 cm.

Divide perennials in early spring or early autumn. Since coreopsis grow quickly, this should be done regularly, once every 2 years. The bush is dug up and carefully divided into parts, the divisions are placed in pre-watered holes at a distance of 20-50 cm from each other.
