HomeAbout rosesClimbing Roses: description of varieties, pruning and garter

The best varieties of climbing roses are indispensable for vertical gardening. It is one thing – an arch or a gazebo in a summer cottage surrounded by flower beds, and quite another if these structures are decorated with climbing plants. And if climbing plants still bloom throughout the warm season, then small architectural forms take on a completely different look. In order for the plants to clearly repeat all the bends of the support, you need to know how to properly cut climbing roses and how to properly tie them up.

Description of beautiful climbing roses and their photos

As follows from the name and description of climbing roses, these plants have long whip shoots up to 5 meters or more, which do not have their own wrapping organs such as antennae. Therefore, they need an auxiliary device in the form of a frame.

Pay attention to the photos of beautiful climbing roses – they decorate walls and fences, arches and pergolas:

These plants are divided into two groups: once flowering and re-flowering:

  • The first are very tall climbing vines with very lush and abundant flowering. Their flowers are small, collected in heavy clusters. Varieties of these roses belong to the Rambler group. They bloom in June for a month. Inflorescences are large, from 30-40 small flowers, appear only on last year’s shoots. Until late autumn, the bushes retain openwork greenery.
  • The climber group combines varieties of large-flowered climbing roses obtained by crossing rambler roses with floribunda and hybrid tea roses. They have thicker shoots up to 3.5 m long and bloom on the shoots of the current year continuously until late autumn, but flowering is not so plentiful.

Repeating or continuously blooming climbing roses have many varieties with large or small flowers, fragrant or not very fragrant, drooping or looking up.

Below you will find a photo and description of climbing roses of the most popular varieties:

How to cut and tie up a climbing rose (with photo)

All these plants are spectacular. With proper pruning of climbing roses and tying them up, they retain their decorative effect for a long time.

Here you will learn how to prune and tie a climbing rose in your garden:

  • Once flowering bushes form very long shoots, take up a lot of space, not only in height, but also in width.
  • By bending the young branches down and tying them horizontally, we stimulate the powerful growth of shoots and rapid flowering the next year along the entire length of the stem.
  • In re-blooming roses, at the end, faded flowers are removed to the first whole leaf looking outward. It is especially important to remove wilted flowers after the first wave of flowering, because new shoots will grow from the buds in the axils of the leaves and bloom.
  • Before pruning a climbing rose, dry, diseased and very thin shoots are removed from them. The main pruning of old branches is carried out annually in the spring.

The use of these roses in the garden significantly increases the area of green spaces.

Climbing roses should be tied as horizontally as possible, since the largest number of flower buds are formed on the upper side of horizontal shoots.

Here you can see in the photo how to tie a climbing rose to ensure its active growth:

Modern varieties of climbing roses are based on different types of wild roses with long shoots. At the end of the flowering period, partially or completely faded shoots are cut out from roses.

The minimum distance between plantings is 120-150 cm, so that healthy, well-developed shoots do not have to be cut out due to thickening during the growth period. Vigorous varieties need 200-250 cm.

The best time for planting, especially in the south, is autumn (October). Among these plants are those that grow successfully as vines on the northern wall of buildings.
