Among the orchid genera, cologina and playone occupy a special place. These plants are characterized by an abundance of small flowers on long peduncles. Cologina blooms predominantly white, and playone blooms in various shades of pink. A genus similar to them is dendrochilum. It has even smaller flowers, often flowering of this plant is accompanied by a pleasant aroma. The content of cologina, dendrohilum and playone at home has some features – you can find them on this page.

Types of orchids celogina

Coelogyne orchids ( COELOGYNE ) is a large and widely cultivated genus of over 200 sympodial orchids native to the rainforests of India and the Malay Archipelago. The name comes from the Latin koilos, which means a hollow on the column of an orchid flower.

Most species of orchids included in this spectacular genus of epiphytic and lithophytic plants are distinguished by white or greenish flowers with a contrasting lip. The flowers of some species have an exquisite aroma.

Coelogyne massangeana a large plant with elongated ovoid, slightly furrowed bulbs and large petiolate leaves. Flower racemes up to 60-80 cm long, drooping with yellowish-white flowers with small brownish spots on the lip and with a weak aroma.

Coelogyne dayana is a rather large plant with a long inflorescence up to 1 m long, bearing many showy flowers. The coelogeny has thin, ovoid pseudobulbs, bearing two apical leaves with longitudinal grooves.

As can be seen in the photo, this type of celogina orchid has a white lip with a chocolate brown pattern and white scallops: the rest of the tepals are creamy white. This orchid needs a moderately warm room, partial shade and a constantly moist substrate. The birthplace of this type of cologin is Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Kalimantan, Java and Sumatra.

Coelogyne fimbriata is a miniature orchid with oval, two-leaved pseudobulbs not exceeding 3 cm in length. The flowers are creamy brown in color, the lip is fringed with a red-brown pattern. This species needs a fairly cool, shady and humid environment and flowers from August to November. Pot culture preferred.

Cologina comb (cristata) and her photo

The most famous species of the genus, which has become widespread in culture due to its relative unpretentiousness, is the comb coelogue (Coelogyne cristata), which grows wild in the mountain forests of the Himalayas. For the first time, cologina comb was found in 1824 by the director of the Calcutta Botanical Garden, Nathaniel Wallich, in the mountains of Nepal.

This is an orchid with ovoid or rounded tetrahedral bulbs with one or two leaves.

Look at the photo: celogina cristata has white flowers with a lip in yellow-orange markings. They have a delicate aroma and are collected 5-9 pieces in loose, relatively short drooping racemes. Blooms in January-March.

Caring for celogina cristata and other species

Cologins are considered one of the lightest plants in the culture, they adapt well to any home environment. Prefer coolness and abundant diffused lighting. When caring for celogina from the beginning of summer until October, the plant is watered with soft water evenly and plentifully, in winter watering is minimal.

In spring and summer, once every 2 weeks, orchids are fertilized; in the autumn-winter period, top dressing is not required. Cologina cristata, like most species of this genus, should be grown in pots in a substrate based on pine bark. However, cologin species with long dangling tassels are best grown in hanging baskets.

Playone formosan orchid care at home

Pleione (PLEIONE) is a small genus of miniature spectacular ground orchids, including about 25 species and several hundred artificial hybrids, blooming profusely in early spring in a leafless state. Among them there are epiphytic orchids and orchids leading a terrestrial lifestyle.

Pay attention to the photo of the playone – their flowers are similar to cattleya flowers, appear in spring, are single or paired.

The genus was first described by the English botanist D. Don in 1825. Registered as a separate genus only in 1903.

The most famous species of Pleione is beautiful (Pleione formosana), originally from Eastern China and Taiwan, is one of the most winter-hardy species in the entire genus. Large flowers with a diameter of 8-10 cm are distinguished by a wide variety of shades of pink, there are also white-flowered forms.

When caring for a playon, glazed balconies and loggias are chosen to accommodate plants. Starting from the moment of planting, they are kept in a cool, bright place, moistened by spraying. When the orchid begins to grow, the first watering is done. Water more frequently after flowering. In the hot summer, watering is done daily. In culture, it is desirable to fertilize with each watering.

In early September, this orchid is watered for the last time and the bulbs are allowed to ripen until October-November. Playone is transplanted at home in late January and early February. The bulbs are cleaned of traces of the old substrate and the roots are cut. For planting, use a soil mixture of pine bark, sphagnum and perlite (2: 3: 1). Planted in wide low pots of several pieces.

Types of Dendrohilum Orchid

The Dendrochilum orchid (DENDROCHILUM) is a large genus of single-leaved sympodial orchids native to the Philippines, Borneo and Sumatra. The name comes from the Latin dendron – “tree”, cheilos – “lip”.

Most of them are epiphytes that grow in montane rainforests.

Flowers bloom once a year on a new growth; they are quite small, often fragrant.

Quite popular in culture is the long-leaved dendrochilum (Dendrochilum longifolium) – a species of orchid that is common in New Guinea, but also found in Indonesia, Malaysia and in some parts of the Philippines. The peduncles of this type of orchid are very long, longer than the leaves, and bear about 40 small green flowers with a very strong spicy aroma.

In addition to the long-leaved dendrochilum, other species are grown in culture that differ in the color of the flowers and the shape of the racemose inflorescences:

Dendrochilum Cobbianum (Dendrochilum cobbianum) – flowers of 40-45 pieces per inflorescence, fragrant, white or pale yellow.

Dendrochilum membranous (Dendrochilum glumaceum) – white or yellowish, fragrant.

Dendrochilum filiform (Dendrochilum filiforme) – yellowish-white or yellow, fragrant, 0.8-1 cm in diameter.

Dendrochilum broadleaf (Dendrochilum latifolium) – fragrant, up to 2 cm in diameter, yellow-green in color.

Dendrohilum is grown in moderately warm conditions, with good lighting, in summer with obligatory shading from the sun. For planting it is better to use orchid pots with a breathable substrate, for miniature species a substrate of pure sphagnum moss is suitable, larger species prefer a substrate based on pine bark with the addition of perlite and sphagnum moss.

For orchids of this genus, it is necessary to ensure good air ventilation and high humidity (it is advisable to spray the plant several times a day). You can use special humidifiers.
