Bulb flowers: planting and care

HomeGarden FlowersBulb flowers: planting and care

As a rule, all garden bulbous flowers are perennials, which means that they are the priority for gardeners. By sowing these plants once, for at least two years, you can provide your site with a decent design. Growing bulbous flowers, as well as caring for them, is not particularly labor intensive. Some of the most popular bulbs are lilies and gladioli, they are the ones that prevail in the garden plots of the middle lane.

Bulbous perennial flowers for the garden

Bulbous perennials are indispensable for the beauty of your garden, especially in early spring, when there is still so little color in the areas. It is especially pleasant that these flowers are “immediately large”, and the result is always guaranteed, even for inexperienced gardeners.

Some of the bulbous flowers for the garden always live in a permanent place, and some must be dug up for the winter and stored in a cold, but frost-free room. In terms of beauty, it is difficult for many other plants to compare with flowering bulbous flowers, and given that they are also one of the “easiest” flowers to care for, you should definitely bet on them in your garden. Bulbs for planting and caring for bulbous flowers can be purchased at garden centers or borrowed from friends. You can also propagate your favorite plants yourself.

Growing Bulb Flowers for the Garden

When caring for bulbous flowers, you need to carefully dig up the soil and apply organic and mineral fertilizers, especially for bulbous plants. Depending on the needs of specific plants, if necessary, it is necessary to correct the composition of the soil (for example, if the soil is too acidic in some place, it is necessary to lime it). In the places of future plantings of bulbous plants, add some sand. Wait 2-3 days for the soil to settle before planting bulbous flowers.

One of the conditions for planting and caring for bulbs is the observance of sowing dates. Spring bulbs are planted from September 20 to October 7, starting with daffodils and small bulbs, and tulips are planted last. Summer bulbs are planted in spring, in late April – early May.

For bulbs, holes are dug, the depth of which is approximately two to three times the height of the bulb of a particular species, the bottom of the hole is sprinkled with river sand. The main thing for bulbs is not to confuse the “bottom” and “top” of the bulbs. Grouse bulbs are planted at an angle of 45 degrees.

Caring for perennial bulbous garden flowers

When caring for bulbous flowers, watering should be moderate, fertilizer – too. Do not fertilize bulbs with organic matter, it is better to use mineral fertilizers. After flowering, when the stems turn yellow, cut the plants down to soil level. In fact, most bulbs do not need to be dug up, the only exception is tulips, and even then not all. Moreover, this condition is not as categorical as is often believed. Even those tulips that need to be dug up can be left in place for 2-3 years. For the winter, bulbous plants do not cover anything, they are all exceptionally frost-resistant. An exception is only in the year of planting, while only spunbond flaps are enough for insulation. Do not be afraid of spring frosts: bulbous ones can easily withstand temperatures as low as 7 degrees below zero.

bulbous gladiolus flowers

Gladiolus are magnificent, festive, exquisite flowers with a wide variety of shapes and colors.

What varieties of gladioli have not been bred: there are even gladioli with green flowers.

If you plant 7-8 different varieties together, it will be an amazing sight. Gladiolus will definitely work out for you, all it needs is a sunny place and loose soil, it is desirable that it be pre-filled with compost. In the shade, gladioli can also bloom, but this will happen much later. It is necessary to plant gladioli in early spring, at the end of April, the planting method is like that of tulips, always with a sand substrate. After the first frost, gladiolus bulbs need to be dug up, dried well at room temperature for two weeks, and then put in the basement in a box with sand or wrapped in paper and on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.

Garden decorative bows

Garden ornamental bows are unpretentious plants, among them there are both dwarfs and giants, and they bloom in summer (June and July).

You can plant onions in autumn and spring. If in autumn, then before tulips, in the second half of September. Landings are best covered for the winter with lutrasil. Planted in late April in spring. When planting, the depth, like most bulbs, is three times the diameter of the bulb. Onions prefer sunny places or partial shade, but even in the shade they can also bloom. Another thing is that they do not like stagnant moisture and “heavy” soil, so damp, shady places are not the most suitable conditions for them, and after a while they can rot.

Bulb garden lily flowers

Bulbous lilies have many varieties, among them there are capricious ones, there are also unpretentious ones.

Lilies are planted in the fall, in September, sand must be poured into the hole, as the bulbs are tender and can easily rot with poor drainage. It is better to plant soon after purchase, do not store for a long time, as the bulbs are tender and dry out immediately. After planting, the bulbs need to be insulated with lutrasil for the winter. Lily loves sunny places, but those where during the day at least for an hour – another shadow looked in. Lily is responsive to fertilizers (it is better to use mineral ones), it is also moisture-loving, so on hot days you need to monitor the condition of the soil. It is better not to loosen the soil, but to mulch. Faded flowers should be removed to prolong flowering. Bulbous lily flowers are propagated either by dividing overgrown nests, or by scales taken from the bulb. It must be remembered that in the first year after planting with bulbs and in the first two years after planting with scales, there will be no abundant flowering. Gradually, the lower part of the lilies is exposed, this is normal. It is necessary to take this into account when compiling flower beds and plant any plants to cover the “legs” of lilies.

perennial bulbous flowers crocuses

Crocuses are perhaps one of the earliest flowers in the garden. Sometimes they begin to bloom already on thawed patches in the snow. Small-flowered crocuses bloom earlier, large-flowered ones later.

It is best to plant crocuses in groups, curtains, in sunny places. The soil they, like all bulbs, love is not heavy, without stagnant moisture. Departure time is September. Crocuses are unpretentious and frost-resistant, they cannot freeze out. However, they have a peculiarity – if the winter turned out to be cold, or severe frosts hit without snow, crocuses can “get cold”. Then they only release leaves, but do not bloom in spring. Well, next spring they will again delight you with abundant flowering.

Bulbous flowers for the garden tulips (with photo)

Tulips are sure to succeed with all gardeners, perhaps only on swampy, waterlogged soil they can be difficult.

Almost any soil is suitable for these bulbous perennials, as long as it is sufficiently loose. Place – partial shade or sun. For luxurious flowering, tulips need to be fertilized with special fertilizer for bulbs. Tulips are botanical and specific. Botanical – smaller, and they do not need to be dug up.

Pay attention to the photos of these bulbous gardens for the garden: species tulips are distinguished by high “growth” and a variety of forms, there are early and late ones, and they are also divided into groups depending on their appearance.

They are:

Simple .

Terry .

Lily-colored .

Parrot .

Peony .

Species tulips theoretically need to be dug up after flowering every year and stored until autumn planting under certain temperature conditions. Of course, especially if there are a lot of tulips in the garden and there is no special basement, this is not convenient. In fact, digging every year is not required. You can not dig up specific tulips up to 5 years. But then it will have to be done in order to avoid their degeneration. Tulips are planted in late autumn – early October.

bulbous flowers hazel grouse

Bulb flowers hazel grouse – showy bulbous plants, quite simple to care for.

The hazel grouse blooms in the middle terms – when the early bulbs are still blooming, and the later ones have already begun to bloom. At the same time, stems with leaves appear early, when the snow has just melted. The stems are not afraid of frost, but if the buds have already appeared, the plant must be insulated with lutrasil, placing light greenhouse arcs over it, otherwise the hazel grouse will not bloom. It is planted in the fall, in September, and the bulb is placed in the hole at an angle of 45 degrees, since it is difficult to determine in appearance where the “legs” of the hazel grouse bulbs are. Before flowering, it needs to be fed with special fertilizer for bulbs and watered from time to time – that’s all the care. The hazel grouse will feel great in partial shade. It can also be planted in the sun, but there it fades faster. It is better to mulch the soil in the places where hazel grouse is planted so that it does not compact and retain moisture.
